The genetic structure of CIMMYT and US inbreds and its implications for tropical maize breeding

Rui Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the genetic structure of temperate maize inbreds with expired Plant Variety Protection in tropical maize breeding programs using DNA markers. The analysis revealed two major groups, CIMMYT and ex-PVP, with ex-PVP lines clustering according to BSSS and NSSS heterotic groups. Genetic divergence estimates favored breeding with different heterotic groups and could be used to maximize genetic divergence and combining ability in CIMMYT heterotic groups.

Genetic diversity of maize landraces from the South-West of France

Yacine Diaw et al.

Summary: The study shows that maize landraces in the South-West of France have diverse origins, with a predominance of Northern Flint germplasm. Two weakly differentiated genetic groups were identified in the region, with a longitudinal gradient along the area. The existence of a contact zone between the groups near the Garonne valley suggests evolutionary forces at play.

Germplasm exchange is critical to conservation of biodiversity and global food security

Stephen Smith et al.

Summary: Global food security relies on the continual improvement of a small number of food and feed crops. Efficient and widespread exchange of major food crop germplasm across national and regional borders is crucial for food security. Plant breeders, molecular biologists, and agronomists are collaborating globally to achieve greater crop yields and quality through scientifically guided processes.

Genomic variation within the maize stiff-stalk heterotic germplasm pool

Nolan Bornowski et al.

Summary: High-quality genome assemblies of maize stiff-stalk inbreds were created, revealing extensive collinearity among these inbreds and unique components in the maize pangenome. While representing only a proportion of variation in the original stiff-stalk pool, these inbreds showed significant genetic and genomic variation, supporting the potential for continued breeding success in this pool.

Engaging Farmer Stakeholders: Maize Producers' Perceptions of and Strategies for Managing On-Farm Genetic Diversity in the Upper Midwest

Cathleen McCluskey et al.

Summary: Debates on genetic diversity of cultivated crops are ongoing due to patent restrictions, especially in the case of U.S. maize. Farmers lack knowledge of seed genetic backgrounds, leading to a decrease in genetic diversity in commercially available hybrids over time. The lack of access to genetic background data prevents vulnerability assessments on landscapes, putting farmers at risk of crop failure.
