HV-KIC property charts of cemented carbides: A comprehensive data collection

Andrei Chychko et al.

Summary: This study collected over 2500 published experimental data on the hardness and indentation fracture toughness of cemented carbides in the past 40 years, illustrating the influence of microstructure, chemical composition, and processing on the hardness-toughness relationship. Two-dimensional plots were used for visualizing the experimental information, serving as a well-structured database for the cemented carbide community.

A Comparison Between Hardness-Scaling and Ball-Indentation Techniques on Predicting Stress/Strain Distribution and Failure Behavior of Resistance Spot Welded Advanced High Strength Steel

Shiping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compared the stress-strain curves obtained through hardness-scaling and ball-indentation techniques to simulate and predict the stress/strain distribution and failure behavior of resistance spot welded joints. The results showed that both methods can accurately predict the failure location, but the ball-indentation method provides slightly better predictions of failure behavior compared to the hardness-scaling method. However, the hardness-scaling method is a simple and convenient technique, which can serve as a qualitative analysis for the failure behavior of resistance spot welded joints.

Critical Evaluation of Spherical Indentation Stress-Strain Protocols for the Estimation of the Yield Strengths of Steels

S. Mohan et al.

Summary: This paper critically evaluates the quantitative relationships between standard tensile tests and spherical indentation stress-strain protocols for a broad range of steels, finding that the spherical indentation protocols can accurately predict tensile yield strengths with lower error compared to conventional hardness measurements.

Uncertainties in the representative indentation stress and strain using spherical nanoindentation

Fei-Ya Huang et al.

Summary: The study reviewed definitions of indentation strain and stress, calculated 20 indentation strain-stress curves, and used finite element method to predict load-displacement curves for different tests. Among various combinations, sigma(X)-epsilon(K), sigma(O)-epsilon(A), and sigma(H)-epsilon(M) showed better fitting curves compared to others.

On the effective load during nanoindentation creep testing with continuous stiffness measurement (CSM)

Summary: Accurately determining the applied load is crucial in measuring hardness, especially in nanoindentation testing with continuous stiffness measurement (CSM). This study proposes the concept of an effective load during nanoindentation creep testing with CSM and validates it through theoretical analysis and experiments, finding significant implications for rate-dependent materials.

Profilometry-based indentation plastometry to obtain stress-strain curves from anisotropic superalloy components made by additive manufacturing

Y. T. Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated superalloy samples produced by an additive manufacturing process, finding a distinct anisotropy that is suitable for studying the effect of anisotropy on stress-strain curves. The methodology of Profilometry-based Inverse FEM for Plasticity Parameters from Indentation (PIP) produced stress-strain curves consistent with directly-measured curves, and full 3-D characterization of indent profiles can provide a semi-quantitative indication of plastic anisotropy. This could have a transformative impact on mechanical testing procedures.
