Oral function and nutritional status in non-acute hospitalised elders

Midori Ohta et al.

Summary: The association between oral function and nutritional state is more obvious in nutritional risk scores than in the malnutrition diagnosis by GLIM in this sample. The NiOF score, as an interval variable, showed correlations with number of teeth, as well as nutritional risk evaluated by the MNA-SF and NRS scores. Additionally, NiOF scores were higher among denture wearers.

Relationship between chewing features and body mass index in young adolescents

Ghassan Idris et al.

Summary: The study found that overweight adolescents chewed at a slower pace and for a shorter time period compared to healthy-weight adolescents. There was a significant negative correlation between BMIz score and chewing pace, as well as chewing time. This unexpected finding may indicate a potential link between chewing behavior and weight status in youth, warranting further investigation into interventions targeting eating behavior for weight management.

Increased oral processing and a slower eating rate increase glycaemic, insulin and satiety responses to a mixed meal tolerance test

Ai Ting Goh et al.

Summary: Natural variations in eating rate and associated oral processing contribute to differences in post-prandial glucose, insulin, and satiety responses. Slower eaters have higher post-prandial insulin levels and longer oral exposure time compared to faster eaters, leading to differences in glucose response. Faster eaters also report higher levels of hunger and desire to eat compared to slower eaters.

Changes of bolus properties and the triggering of swallowing in healthy humans

Izumi Kochi et al.

Summary: The study investigated how bolus properties change over time during chewing and identified factors affecting chewing and swallowing behaviors in healthy individuals. Results showed that hardness gradually decreased, adhesiveness rapidly decreased at the beginning of chewing, and chewing duration was significantly related to stimulated salivary flow rate. Variation in chewing duration and swallowing initiation was not dependent on bolus properties, but mainly on surface lubrication.

Survey of oral hypofunction in older outpatients at a dental hospital

Wakana Onuki et al.

Summary: The study examined the state of oral hypofunction among outpatients at a university hospital, finding that 35.9% of patients were diagnosed with oral hypofunction. The diagnosis was significantly related to patient age, medical history, and chief complaint at presentation. Reduced occlusal force was strongly associated with the diagnosis of oral hypofunction.

Summary: This study found that food texture influences oral processing, bolus formation, and postprandial glucose responses, especially for fast and slow eaters. Saliva uptake and oral exposure time at swallowing were predictors of postprandial glycemic responses among slow eaters.
