Impedance Response of a Thin Film on an Electrode: Deciphering the Influence of the Double Layer Capacitance

Oumaima Gharbi et al.

Summary: This study identifies the different contributions of interfacial capacitance in passive materials or thin protective coatings deposited on electrode surfaces. The method involves a graphical analysis of EIS results to determine both passive-film capacitance in the high-frequency domain and double-layer capacitance in the low-frequency domain. It demonstrates the necessity of correcting high-frequency data for the double-layer contribution and provides a method independent of the physicochemical origins of frequency dispersion in interfacial capacitances.

Anodic hydrogen evolution on Mg

Yang Li et al.

Summary: The estimated cathodic hydrogen evolution rates were found to be lower than the measured anodic hydrogen evolution rates, contradicting the assumption of enhanced catalytic activity mechanism of Mg corrosion. Moreover, the measured apparent Mg valence of 1.2 +/- 0.1 supported the uni-positive Mg+ mechanism of Mg corrosion.

Insight into physical interpretation of high frequency time constant in electrochemical impedance spectra of Mg

Linqian Wang et al.

Summary: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were used to study the surface evolution of magnesium in 0.05 M NaCl solution at three different pH levels. The thickness of the MgO film was calculated based on the assumption that the high frequency time constant originates from the surface film. Comparisons with actual surface conditions confirmed that the high frequency time constant is related to the barrier properties of the surface film.
