Infectious keratitis: an update on epidemiology, causative microorganisms, risk factors, and antimicrobial resistance

Darren Shu Jeng Ting et al.

Summary: Corneal opacity is the 5th leading cause of blindness globally, and infectious keratitis (IK) is the main cause of corneal blindness in both developed and developing countries. Bacteria and fungi are the most common causative microorganisms, with major risk factors including contact lens wear and ocular surface diseases. Broad-spectrum topical antimicrobial treatment is the mainstay of treatment for IK, although antimicrobial resistance poses a challenge in some parts of the world.

Clinical aspects and prognosis of polymicrobial keratitis caused by different microbial combinations: a retrospective comparative case study

Ibrahim Inan Harbiyeli et al.

Summary: The study compared predisposing factors, clinical findings, treatment results, and prognosis for polymicrobial keratitis. Bacterial-fungus coexistence was the most common combination among patients, but other combinations should also be considered. Corneal infiltrate size may be an important indicator of disease progression and treatment response, and closer and longer follow-up should be planned for older patients.
