Effects of w/b ratio, fly ash, limestone calcined clay, seawater and sea-sand on workability, mechanical properties, drying shrinkage behavior and micro-structural characteristics of concrete

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: There is a global shortage of fresh water and river sand due to the high demand for concrete in the construction industry. This study investigates the use of seawater and sea sand as alternatives to alleviate these shortages and achieve sustainable development. The results show that the addition of seawater and sea sand improves the early compressive strength but decreases the workability and later strength of the concrete. The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can enhance the overall performance of seawater and sea sand concrete (SSC), with certain SCMs showing superior microstructural properties. This study provides valuable insights into the utilization of seawater and sea sand in concrete and the impact of SCMs on SSC.

Properties of Lime-Cement Concrete Containing Various Amounts of Waste Tire Powder under Different Ground Moisture Conditions

Leili Mohammadifar et al.

Summary: This research evaluated the impact of various rubber powder contents on the fresh, geotechnical and durability properties of Lime-cement concrete (LCC) at different saturation degrees. The results showed that the application of tire powder increases workability and decreases the water absorption of LCC. Moreover, the strength reduction of LCC with rubber powder contents varying from 0 to 20% under 100% saturation degree was less than 10%.

Clayey soil stabilization using alkali-activated volcanic ash and slag

Hania Miraki et al.

Summary: This research explored the potential of using alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and volcanic ash (VA) as green binders in clayey soil stabilization projects. The results demonstrated that the coexistence of GGBS and VA in geopolymerization process was more effective, resulting in better performance against wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles. Additionally, the alkali-activated mixtures showed low carbon footprints.

Influence of metakaolin and limestone on chloride binding of slag activated by mixed magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide

Zhijian Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of metakaolin and limestone incorporation on the chloride binding capacity of alkali-activated slag (AAS). The results show that the chloride binding capacity of AAS can be increased by up to 50% with the addition of 20% metakaolin or limestone. Different mechanisms for binding enhancement are proposed for these two blended AAS systems.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using volcanic ash-based geopolymer as an alternative soil stabilizer to cement by comparing their shear strength behavior and life cycle assessment. The results showed that increasing binder content changes the structure of clayey soil through aggregation, thus improving the shear resistance.

Summary: The study shows that thermal curing can enhance the chloride binding capacity and compressive strength of fly ash geopolymers under different curing conditions. High curing temperatures promote precursor dissolution reactions, resulting in dense geopolymer matrix with high compressive strength, and reducing the rate of chloride ingress.

The efficiency of chloride extraction using un-galvanized steel anode

Nourhan EL-sayed et al.

Summary: Electro-chemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) is an effective technique for extracting chloride ions from reinforced concrete structures, but it may also have detrimental effects on mechanical properties. This study investigated the effectiveness of ECE using a new type of anode, and examined the behavior of slabs and the influence of initial chloride content on extraction efficiency.
