A new ternary composite steel rebar coating for enhanced corrosion resistance in chloride environment

Manu Harilal et al.

Summary: This work presents a novel ternary cement polymer composite coating (CPFNIC) with enhanced corrosion protection for steel rebars in a chloride environment. The new coating significantly delays the onset of corrosion due to the synergistic contributions from fly ash, nanoparticles, and inhibitor. Electrochemical studies show improved corrosion performance of CPFNIC compared to uncoated rebars, with higher corrosion potential, lower corrosion current density, higher polarization resistance, and lower corrosion rate. Visual inspection and weight loss measurements confirm the improved resistance of CPFNIC coated rebars in chloride environment.

Hydration and microstructural characterization of early-age cement paste with ultrasonic wave velocity and electrical resistivity measurements

Hong Jae Yim et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the microstructural evolution of fresh cement paste for 24 hours through two types of non-destructive measurements and compares them with the setting time by Vicat needle test. The results show that the critical times obtained by different methods vary. XRD and TG analyses were then performed to identify hydration products at specific points.

Monitoring of steel corrosion and cracking in cement paste exposed to combined sulfate-chloride attack with X-ray microtomography

Hongfang Sun et al.

Summary: The study monitored the degradation process of reinforced cement paste exposed to different salt solutions, finding that the presence of sulfate ions significantly delayed the onset of chloride-induced corrosion but did not affect the corrosion rate, while chloride ions mitigated damage from sulfate attack. Microtomography (mu CT) provided a new angle to measure interfacial displacement and valuable input for modeling non-uniform chloride-induced corrosion in the presence of sulfate ions.

Diffusion of chloride ion in coral aggregate seawater concrete under marine environment

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the diffusion law of chloride ions in coral aggregate seawater concrete under two marine environments, confirming that the diffusion behavior conforms to Fick's second law of diffusion. Wet/dry cycles were found to have a significant promotional effect on chloride ion diffusion. The diffusion coefficient and apparent chloride ion concentration were shown to have a power function relationship with time.

Long-term performance of galvanic anodes for the protection of steel reinforced concrete structures

Deepak K. Kamde et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that alkali-activated galvanic anodes can protect steel rebars from corrosion for at least 12 years in a natural environment. However, analysis after 12 years revealed that pores in encapsulating mortar were partially filled with zinc corrosion products, resulting in substantial pore blockage and a reduction in the pH buffer surrounding the zinc metal. These findings suggest that characteristics of the tie wire-zinc metal interface may impact the long-term performance of galvanic anodes. Specifications proposed in the study aim to assist manufacturers in designing durable galvanic anode systems.

Long-term performance and life-cycle-cost benefits of cathodic protection of concrete structures using galvanic anodes

Naveen Krishnan et al.

Summary: This study suggests that Patch Repair without galvanic anodes (PR strategy) can lead to continued corrosion and eventual replacement of structures, while the cathodic protection using galvanic anodes (CP strategy) can enhance service life and reduce life cycle cost. The data indicates that CP strategy is more cost-effective than PR strategy in the long run.

Electrochemical chloride extraction on reinforced concrete contaminated external chloride: Efficiencies of intermittent applications and impacts on hydration products

Thi Hai Yen Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficiency of electrochemical chloride extraction on cement hydration products in concrete contaminated by external chloride ions. The intermittent application modes were more effective in removing chloride ions and causing less impact on C-S-H compared to continuous application mode.

On the novel approach of sacrificial cathodic protection of mild steel in simulated concrete pore solution and concrete mortar by high phosphorus pig iron anodes

Nisheeth Kr Prasad et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effectiveness of high phosphorus pig iron as a sacrificial anode for cathodic protection of mild steel in concrete. Results showed that pig iron samples exhibited more active potential compared to mild steel in simulated concrete pore solution, with lower polarization resistance as phosphorus content increased.
