Impact of hot mix asphalt plant silo storage conditions on blending and diffusion between virgin and RAP binders

Payman Pirzadeh et al.

Summary: Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is a key component in Hot Mix Asphalts (HMA), and the blending between RAP and virgin binders influences the durability and performance of HMA. Research suggests that there is an optimum storage time of 8-12 hours for HMA in silos, during which diffusion between binders approaches completion without significant binder aging, leading to improved resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking.

Investigating the engineering properties of asphalt binder modified with waste plastic polymer

Nuha S. Mashaan et al.

Summary: The current interest in reusing waste polymer highlights the substantial benefits of using it for improving asphalt properties, achieving environmental stability, and promoting industrial-economic benefits. Research indicates that incorporating 6-8% waste PET plastic improves rutting and aging resistances in asphalt, while 8% PET enhances fatigue cracking resistance.

Effects of specimen size and loading conditions on the fracture behaviour of asphalt concretes in the SCB test

Dai Xuan Lu et al.

Summary: The SCB test with 100 mm samples can effectively evaluate the fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures with NMAS up to 19 mm. While fracture toughness for the two diameters was similar, fracture energy from 100 mm samples was about 21% less than that from 150 mm samples, and cracking resistance index from the 150 mm samples was approximately 8% higher than from the 100 mm samples.

Molecular dynamics study on improvement effect of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate on adhesive properties of asphalt-aggregate interface

Hongliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed an environmentally friendly anti-stripping agent for asphalt and evaluated its improvement effect on the cohesive and adhesive properties of an asphalt mixture through molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results showed that the anti-stripping agent increased the cohesion and adhesion of the asphalt, while also enhancing the moisture damage resistance of the asphalt mixture. Most simulation results were in agreement with experimental data reported in previous studies.

Summary: Three main conclusions emerge from the review: (1) Recycling of waste polymeric materials can help reduce landfilled or incinerated plastic waste. (2) Proper selection of recycling methods for waste plastics and rubbers can effectively address recycling issues without compromising mechanical properties. (3) The majority of published articles in construction materials research overlook the importance of pretreating waste polymeric materials to ensure compatibility with construction materials.

Understanding the role of waste cooking oil residue during the preparation of rubber asphalt

Jianmin Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the compatibility of rubber asphalt was significantly improved by pre-swelling the ground tire rubber (GTR) with waste cooking oil residue (WCOR) prior to preparation, compared to other methods such as untreated GTR or simultaneous blending of GTR and WCOR. Chemical and compositional characterization suggested that the improved compatibility was mainly attributed to the extended release of natural rubber (NR) and traces of synthetic rubber (SR) and inorganic filler into the asphalt phase.

Feasibility of using micronized recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as an asphalt binder additive: A laboratory study

Rouzbeh Ghabchi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of incorporating different amounts of Micronized PET (MPET) into PG 58-28 asphalt binder on its performance and evaluates the durability of asphalt mixes. The results show that MPET significantly improves viscosity, adhesion, and resistance to cracking, rutting, and moisture-induced damage. The use of MPET as an asphalt binder modifier is an effective method for enhancing mechanical properties of asphalt pavements while addressing environmental concerns and conserving natural resources.
