Mechanical insights into the development of fracture corridors in layered rocks

Ghislain de Joussineau et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the formation of fracture corridors in sedimentary rocks by studying the combined role of contrasts in mechanical properties of consecutive layers and pre-existing fracturing. The study identifies favorable stress conditions supporting further fracturing and characterizes three situations leading to the development of incipient fracture corridors. A new conceptual model is proposed for the formation of these features in the subsurface, with important consequences for the characterization and modeling of fractured reservoirs.

Origin of Strong Nonlinear Dependence of Fracture (Joint) Spacing on Bed Thickness in Layered Rocks: Mechanical Analysis and Modeling

A. I. Chemenda et al.

Summary: Fracturing significantly affects both the mechanical stability and permeability of rocks. Studies have shown that the relationship between fracture spacing and the thickness of fractured layers is generally nonlinear, especially in thick beds. Modeling has revealed that the number of fractures in a layer reaches saturation under horizontal extension, and the ratio D = T/S shows a close to linear increase with T.

Power-law relationship between joint spacing and bed thickness in sedimentary rocks and implications for layered rock mechanics

Shaocheng Ji et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the fracture spacing of cross joints is consistently larger than that of systematic joints, with a significantly larger m value indicating direction-dependent interfacial shear stress. Additionally, doubts are raised about the existence of joint saturation in sedimentary rocks.
