Does a pedagogical agent's gesture frequency assist advanced foreign language users with learning declarative knowledge?

Robert O. Davis et al.

Summary: Research has shown that in multimedia environments, pedagogical agents exhibiting various gesture types and frequencies can impact foreign language learners. While gestures can enhance the agent persona, the frequency of gestures can lead to conflicting learning outcomes, highlighting the importance of the strength of social cues.

A systematic narrative review of agent persona on learning outcomes and design variables to enhance personification

Robert O. Davis et al.

Summary: Research shows that the persona of virtual humans has limited impact on learning outcomes, with design features such as facial expressions and gestures playing a more important role. Environmental details have an unclear direction in affecting persona perception.

Examining the Effects of a Pedagogical Agent With Dual-Channel Emotional Cues on Learner Emotions, Cognitive Load, and Knowledge Transfer Performance

Shen Ba et al.

Summary: The study found that learners assigned to the affective pedagogical agent reported higher emotional levels and higher instructional efficiency. While there were no significant differences in perceived task difficulty among groups, learners with the affective pedagogical agent performed better on the knowledge transfer test.

Effectiveness of Multimedia Pedagogical Agents Predicted by Diverse Theories: a Meta-Analysis

Juan C. Castro-Alonso et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that learning with multimedia pedagogical agents was more effective than learning without them, with 2D agents being more effective than 3D agents. Most characteristics of the agents, including nonverbal communication, motion, and voice, did not significantly moderate their effectiveness. Students may be able to learn similarly from different types of agents.

The effects of social and cognitive cues on learning comprehension, eye-gaze pattern, and cognitive load in video instruction

Jewoong Moon et al.

Summary: Students face challenges in understanding visual information in multimedia learning, with immersive multimedia environments like virtual reality potentially causing distractions during system-paced instruction. This study examined the impact of social and cognitive cues on students' learning comprehension using video instruction, finding that social cues could undermine learning comprehension while cognitive cues were supportive. Additionally, different visual attention patterns were observed in pictorial information processing, with cognitive cues helping learners integrate pictorial information through visuospatial clues while social cues caused distractions.

An application of Chinese dialogue-based intelligent tutoring system in remedial instruction for mathematics learning

Kai-Chih Pai et al.

Summary: The study found that the pedagogical effectiveness of a Chinese mathematical dialogue-based intelligent tutoring system was comparable to conventional teaching methods, but significantly better than no teaching method. Students showed positive feedback towards the ITS method, as it not only improved math learning but also increased motivation among fifth graders. The effectiveness of ITS in remedial mathematics instruction is discussed in the research.
