Unbox the black-box for the medical explainable AI via multi-modal and multi-centre data fusion: A mini-review, two showcases and beyond

Guang Yang et al.

Summary: XAI is an emerging research field in machine learning that aims to explain the decision-making process of AI systems. In healthcare, XAI is becoming increasingly important for improving the transparency and explainability of deep learning applications, although the lack of explainability in most AI systems may be a major barrier to successful implementation of AI tools in clinical practice.

Semi-supervised NPC segmentation with uncertainty and attention guided consistency

Lin Hu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a two-stage semi-supervised segmentation framework for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is proposed, which includes region of interest (ROI) cropping and semi-supervised segmentation. Key techniques such as coarse target area extraction, self-attention embedded semi-supervised mean teacher (SSMT) model, uncertainty estimation, and feature-level consistency are introduced. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority and good generalization ability of the proposed method over other semi-supervised segmentation methods.

Clinical implications of lumbar developmental spinal stenosis on back pain, radicular leg pain, and disability

M. K. L. Lai et al.

Summary: This study found that subjects with DSS had a higher prevalence of radicular leg pain, more severe pain-related disability, and lower quality of life. Additionally, subjects with DSS had 1.5 and 1.8 times higher odds of experiencing radicular leg pain in the past month and year, respectively, compared to those without DSS.

Unsupervised Image Segmentation by Mutual Information Maximization and Adversarial Regularization

S. Ehsan Mirsadeghi et al.

Summary: The proposed method introduces a fully unsupervised semantic segmentation approach InMARS, which partitions an input image into meaningful regions and then clusters these regions into semantically meaningful classes using mutual information maximization and adversarial training. Experimental results show that the method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the COCO-Stuff and Potsdam datasets.

The profile of the spinal column in subjects with lumbar developmental spinal stenosis

M. K. L. Lai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine differences in spinal imaging characteristics between individuals with and without lumbar developmental spinal stenosis (DSS) in a population-based cohort. The results showed significant differences in various spinal imaging parameters between those with DSS and controls, suggesting potential associations between DSS and narrower interpedicular distance, AP dural sac diameter, lamina angle, and facet joint angulation. Soft tissue changes were not found to be related to DSS, indicating that DSS may be a unique bony maldevelopment. Validation of these findings in other ethnicities and populations is necessary.

Learning to Segment From Scribbles Using Multi-Scale Adversarial Attention Gates

Gabriele Valvano et al.

Summary: This study explores image segmentation in medical imaging using scribble annotations, with the use of multi-scale GAN for generating segmentation masks and a novel attention gating mechanism for improved object localization. Experimental results demonstrate that the model performs comparably to fully annotated models on medical and non-medical datasets, with potential extensions to various settings.
