DEM analysis of the effect of interface transition zone on dynamic splitting tensile behavior of high-strength concrete based on multi-phase model

Xiang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of ITZ strength on high-strength concrete through tensile tests, revealing that a higher ITZ strength results in fewer microcracks and a significantly reduced proportion of ITZ cracks. When the ITZ strength exceeds 0.8 times that of the mortar, the tensile strength is almost unaffected by the ITZ strength.

Fracture mechanics based interpretation of the load sequence effect in the flexural fatigue behavior of concrete using digital image correlation

Abedulgader Baktheer et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental investigations on concrete behavior under monotonic, cyclic, and fatigue loading, with a particular focus on the influence of loading sequence on fatigue life. The study evaluates various response characteristics of fatigue behavior and analyzes the main dissipative mechanisms governing the flexural behavior of concrete under repeated loading. Additionally, the effect of loading sequence is studied in detail using a 3D digital image correlation (DIC) system, providing a theoretical interpretation considering fatigue crack propagation aspects and stress redistribution around the crack tip.

Discrete mechanical models of concrete fracture

John E. Bolander et al.

Summary: Discrete models of solids have been developed to study the discontinuous and heterogeneous nature of material structure and its breakdown under loading, offering novel means for investigating material structure-property relationships. However, lack of comprehensive understanding of both the advantages and disadvantages of discrete models limits their further development and applications. This paper reviews the application of discrete approaches in modeling the mechanical behavior of geomaterials, particularly concrete, classifying the models based on their form and abilities to represent elastic and fracture behaviors in the presence of large-scale material heterogeneity.

Microplane fatigue model MS1 for plain concrete under compression with damage evolution driven by cumulative inelastic shear strain

Abedulgader Baktheer et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new mathematical modeling approach for concrete fatigue behavior under compressive loading, aiming to capture the tri-axial stress redistribution and fatigue damage mechanisms at subcritical load levels. Through experimental validation, the model demonstrates high consistency and accuracy in simulating the response of concrete under various loading scenarios.

Mode II Behavior of High-Strength Concrete under Monotonic, Cyclic and Fatigue Loading

Henrik Becks et al.

Summary: Designing economically efficient and safe concrete structures under high-cycle fatigue loading is challenging due to the complex nature of fatigue damage phenomenology of concrete. Shear sliding is a key factor governing fatigue damage evolution in concrete at subcritical load levels. The fatigue behavior of high-strength concrete under mode II loading was investigated using punch through shear tests, revealing that shear stress range has a greater impact on fatigue life than compressive stress in the ligament.

High-cycle fatigue of bond in reinforced high-strength concrete under push-in loading characterized using the modified beam-end test

Abedulgader Baktheer et al.

Summary: This paper presents combined experimental-numerical investigations of the bond behavior between high-strength concrete and steel reinforcement under various loading scenarios. Different bond lengths, concrete strengths, and bar diameters were studied, leading to the observation of push-through and combined push-through-splitting failure modes. The results will contribute to further detailed theoretical research on the bond fatigue phenomenology governing the behavior of reinforced concrete structures.
