Dual-charge bacterial cellulose as a potential 3D printable material for soft tissue engineering

Monika Hospodiuk-Karwowski et al.

Summary: The surface charge of anionic carboxymethylated bacterial cellulose (CMBC) was modified using chitosan to create cationic surface functionalization and significantly impact the physical properties and overall net charge of the resulting material. Both positively and negatively charged BC were characterized, combined into composites in three ratios, and extruded using a 3D printing system. The chitosan functionalized CMBC showed unique features such as light refraction capabilities, larger particle size, and positive charge, compared to the unfunctionalized negatively charged CMBC.

Synergistic effect of cellulose nanocrystals-graphene oxide as an effective nanofiller for enhancing properties of solventless polymer nanocomposites

Duraisami Dhamodharan et al.

Summary: The study prepared cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) decorated graphene oxide (GO) nanohybrids (CNC@GO) using a solution mixing approach and analyzed their effect on the waterborne epoxy system called solventless polymer (SLP). The results showed that the incorporation of CNC@GO nanohybrids in the SLP nanocomposites led to improved mechanical and thermal properties, with the highest tensile strength observed at the lowest loading content of CNC@GO. Additionally, the thermo-mechanical analysis revealed a significant enhancement in tan delta and storage modulus values for the CNC@GO nanohybrids at lower nanofiller concentration. The successful decoration of CNC on the GO surface contributed to a uniform dispersion, strong hydrogen bonding, and outstanding interaction within the SLP system.

Summary: Calcium sulfate/calcium phosphate (CS-CP)-based bone substitutes in premixed putty form have the potential to be effective in clinical applications, but there is a risk of disintegration when in contact with blood or body fluids. By adding varying amounts of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) to the premixed putty, researchers found that a higher concentration of HPMC led to decreased disintegration. This suggests that CS-CP pre-mixed putty with glycerin and HPMC could be a suitable bone substitute with good anti-washout properties for clinical use.
