Revisiting copper as a case study of creep in pure metals: Prediction of creep response in pure Cu in half-hard and friction-stir-processed states

C. Paoletti et al.

Summary: A physical model was used to study the dependence of minimum creep rate on stress and temperature for ETP copper. The model took into account the role of grain boundaries and the effect of grain growth. Experimental testing confirmed the model's predictions, showing that the grain size and dislocation density have an impact on creep behavior.

Interface-Driven Strain in Heavy Ion-Irradiated Zr/Nb Nanoscale Metallic Multilayers: Validation of Distortion Modeling via Local Strain Mapping

Huseyin Sener Sen et al.

Summary: Nanolayered metallic alloys show different strain behavior under ion irradiation, depending on the thickness of the multilayer structure. The reasons behind this difference are revealed and validated by semianalytical modeling and local strain mapping. The study also uncovers the radiation-induced transition of the Zr/Nb interfaces from incoherent to partially coherent. Based on this work, a specific Zr/NbSS multilayer system with certain thickness is proposed for nuclear applications, which exhibits high radiation damage resistance and minimum swelling.

Revealing nanoscale strain mechanisms in ion-irradiated multilayers

N. Daghbouj et al.

Summary: Tailoring interfaces is an effective method for reducing radiation defect accumulation. Understanding the strain evolution caused by ion bombardment in nuclear materials is crucial for next-generation reactors. In this study, it was found that thin Zr/Nb-6 multilayers exhibit relatively high out-of-plane strain after Cu implantation, while thick Zr/Nb-96 shows minimal distortion. Local strain mapping and molecular dynamics simulations were used to identify the types of defects responsible for layer distortion and the differences between inner and interface-affected regions.

Wangtu Huo et al.

Summary: Inspired by the structure of nacre, researchers have developed a new type of titanium matrix composites with high strength and good plasticity. The composites mimic the brick-and-mortar architecture of nacre and exhibit superior strength-ductility synergy. This study provides a facile approach to fabricating large-sized artificial composites with outstanding properties.

Interphase boundary layer-dominated strain mechanisms in Cu+ implanted Zr-Nb nanoscale multilayers

N. Daghbouj et al.

Summary: In this study, Sputter-deposited Zr/Nb nanoscale metallic multilayers were implanted with Cu+ ions and studied using experimental techniques and DFT calculations. A mathematical method was developed to understand the deformation mechanisms in metallic multilayers subjected to radiation damage. The model predicts that vacancies and interstitials exhibit high mobility in the Zr side of the interface, resulting in a high recombination rate and less strain compared to the Nb side.

Tensile Plasticity of Miniature Specimens for a Low Alloy Steel Investigated by Digital Image Correlation Technique

Wen-Ke Yang et al.

Summary: The study on tensile properties of A588 low alloy steel specimens reveals that decreasing the gauge length of the specimen increases post-necking elongation, while decreasing the specimen thickness reduces elongation. This phenomenon is attributed to the scale-dependent strain-rate sensitivity, while the constant uniform elongation is due to the stable strain hardening exponent. An empirical formula is proposed to describe the relationship between total elongation and strain-rate sensitivity in specimen size-dependent elongation.

Enhancing co-deformation ability of nanograined Ni-W layers in the Ni/Ni-W laminated composites

Fei Liang et al.

Summary: The tensile properties and plastic deformation behavior of Ni/Ni-W laminated composites were investigated with different thickness ratios of the Ni layer to the Ni-W layer. Increasing the thickness ratio improved the strength/ductility synergy due to enhanced co-deformation ability of nanograined Ni-W layers. Thinning of Ni-W layers with small original thickness was achieved through stable grain boundary sliding under interface constraint, leading to a transition in fracture behavior as the Ni-W layer thickness decreased.

Bioinspired multiscale Al2O3-rGO/Al laminated composites with superior mechanical properties

Zhiming Zhang et al.

Summary: The bioinspired multiscale Al2O3-rGO/Al laminated composite, prepared by adding hierarchically aligned Al2O3 and rGO nanosheets into Al matrix, shows a synergistic strengthening effect and additional strengthening mechanism attributed to enhanced load transfer due to good bonding at Al2O3/rGO/Al interface. It presents a new strategy for developing advanced composites with simultaneous enhancement of the modulus-strength-ductility.
