Significantly increasing the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber composites via constructing a synergistic hydrogen bonding network by vacuum filtration

Qing Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, an innovative use of vacuum filtration approach is proposed to modify the circumferential surface of structural carbon fiber, aiming to improve the interfacial adhesion of composites by constructing a synergistic hydrogen bond network. The obtained hybrid reinforcement exhibits significantly higher interfacial shear strength compared to untreated fiber and CNF/CNT grafted fiber. The improvement is mainly attributed to the formation of dense hydrogen bonds among CNFs, PVA, and CNTs, leading to larger energy consumption at interphase, as well as the spider's web-like structure of CNF/CNT that deflects cracks and promotes stress transfer.

Water-based PEKC-COOH sizing agent for enhancing the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber/polyether-ether-ketone composites

Jiaoli Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, soluble phenolphthalein polyaryl-ether-ketone polymers were synthesized and used to prepare water-based sizing agents, significantly improving the interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK composites. The sizing agents showed high solubility, excellent thermal properties, and good storage stability, leading to a significant enhancement in bending strength and interlaminar shear strength of the composites. An illustrative mechanism for the interfacial reinforcement effect of the sizing agent was proposed, providing an effective and green method for enhancing the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites.

Yifan Chen et al.

Summary: The hyperbranched structure of hydroxyl-terminated epoxy resin is modified to obtain waterborne epoxy resin, which can enhance the preparation efficiency and interface adhesion strength of CF sizing agent without sacrificing the tensile strength of CF single fiber. This sizing agent shows a broad application prospect in the composite materials field.

Effects of different rigid-flexible structures of carbon fibers surface on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites

Peifeng Feng et al.

Summary: Different rigid-flexible structures were studied to understand their influence on the interface strength of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The optimal interfacial shear strength and interlaminar shear strength were 86.7 MPa and 85.4 MPa, respectively, with a polymerization time of 12 hours. The impact toughness and tensile strength of the composites increased with polymerization time growth, while the conductivity decreased.

SiC Nanowire-Si3N4 Nanobelt Interlocking Interfacial Enhancement of Carbon Fiber Composites with Boosting Mechanical and Frictional Properties

Leilei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel interlocking enhancement strategy by incorporating silicon carbide nanowires and silicon nitride nanobelts into carbon fiber composites to improve their mechanical and frictional properties. The interlocking enhancement mechanism not only increases the interlaminar shear strength and compressive strength of the composites, but also decreases the friction coefficient and wear rate.

Summary: This study highlighted the importance of strengthening the interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and the matrix, and achieved good interfacial properties by introducing graphene oxide to build a barb structure. The bionic structure not only effectively enhanced the interfacial properties, but also changed the direction of interfacial crack propagation, leading to significant improvements in interlaminar and interfacial shear strength of the composites.
