Explainable machine learning using real, synthetic and augmented fire tests to predict fire resistance and spalling of RC columns

M. Z. Naser et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a systematic machine learning approach for the rapid assessment of fire resistance and fire-induced spalling of reinforced concrete columns. The approach utilizes three novel machine learning algorithms and a comprehensive database of fire tests to analyze the performance of normal and high strength columns under different conditions. The developed ensemble is transparent and provides quantifiable insights, breaking the notion of black-box machine learning. Furthermore, the approach tackles the scarcity of available fire tests by leveraging the use of real, synthetic, and augmented observations. The developed system can analyze over 5,000 columns in under 60 seconds, making it an attractive solution for researchers and practitioners.

A comprehensive evaluation of existing and new model-identification approaches for non-destructive concrete strength assessment

Eman F. Saleh et al.

Summary: This study investigates different model identification approaches to develop a conversion model for accurate estimation of concrete strength. The results show that Deming regression, orthogonal regression, and biobjective approach can best estimate the variability of concrete, while quantile regression and regularized regression can best estimate the local strengths. Based on these results, a hybrid conversion model identification system is proposed.

You only design once (YODO): Gaussian Process-Batch Bayesian optimization framework for mixture design of ultra high performance concrete

Eman Saleh et al.

Summary: This study proposes a Gaussian process modeling with batch Bayesian optimization framework (GP-BBO) to infer the mixture design of Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), offering a list of possible UHPC formulae of a targeted strength and sharing the ML code for interested researchers to verify and expand upon. The framework provides a self-adaptive paradigm for efficient sampling of design space to identify the optimum sampling points and can be extended to infer formulae that satisfy multiple performance objectives.

Data-Driven Flexural Stiffness Model of FRP-Reinforced Concrete Slender Columns

Ghassan Almasabha et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a database of 53 tested slender FRP-RC columns to develop a simplified and accurate model for predicting flexural stiffness. The proposed model showed strong agreement with experimental values and accounted for second-moment order effect to enhance credibility and repeatability. Compared to existing models, the proposed model demonstrated higher accuracy in predicting flexural stiffness of slender FRP-RC columns, providing engineers with a valuable tool for design.

Guide to non-destructive concrete strength assessment: Homogeneity tests and sampling plans

Eman Saleh et al.

Summary: This study discusses the efficient assessment of concrete strength in existing structures using Non-Destructive testing (NDT) in conjunction with destructive techniques. Through extensive statistical analysis, it was found that earth mover's distance and Crame & PRIME;r-von Mises distance outperform the traditional t-test in identifying heterogeneous concrete zones, and are recommended for concrete assessment. Additionally, different core sampling plans were investigated to reduce the probability of inaccurate concrete strength estimation, enhancing the reliability of the assessment.

Slenderness limit of FRP-confined rectangular concrete columns

Eman Saleh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a predictive model to define the slenderness limits of FRP-confined rectangular columns, which is derived using an accurate design-oriented stress-strain relation of FRP-confined rectangular sections and analytically derived loss in column capacity relation. The accuracy of the proposed model was evaluated and showed an acceptable level of accuracy in predicting the slenderness limits for FRP-confined rectangular columns.

Data-Driven Approach to Predict the Plastic Hinge Length of Reinforced Concrete Columns and Its Application

De-Cheng Feng et al.

Summary: The plastic hinge length is a key parameter in the inelastic response of reinforced concrete columns to combined axial and flexural loading. A novel data-driven model based on the AdaBoost algorithm is proposed to predict the plastic hinge length, showing considerably higher prediction accuracy compared to existing methods. Numerical experiments demonstrate that using the predicted plastic hinge length in force-based beam-column models closely resembles laboratory experiments.
