Interlaminar Mechanical Properties and Toughening Mechanism of Highly Thermally Stable Composite Modified by Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Films

Summary: This study focused on the interlaminar mechanical properties and toughening mechanism of carbon fiber-reinforced bismaleimide resin composites modified by polyacrylonitrile nanofiber films. The results showed that the fracture toughness and interlaminar shear strength of the PAN-modified specimens were higher than that of the virgin specimens. SEM images revealed that the PAN nanofiber films toughened the composite on both the mesoscopic and microscopic scales.

Different adhesives, geometrical parameters, and micromechanical properties of reinforced fiber composite adherends are considered. The fiber volume fraction of composite adherends significantly affects failure behavior, with an increase leading to higher elastic stiffness and maximum load-bearing capacity.

Cure-induced strain and failure in deltoid of composite T-joints

Summary: This study proposed the measurement of strain distribution throughout the deltoid using an optical fiber for the first time. The relationship between strain distribution and the failure pattern of the deltoid was examined, leading to the development of a failure index for process-induced failure of deltoids. The study also established and validated a deltoid configuration to suppress process-induced failure based on experimental results and analysis.
