Evaporation-driven self-assembly of binary and ternary colloidal polymer nanocomposites for abrasion resistant applications

James D. Tinkler et al.

Summary: In this study, films segregated by size in the vertical direction were fabricated through the self-assembly of aqueous binary latex/silica particle blends during drying. Ternary films containing additional small latex particles showed improved surface stability and abrasion resistance compared with binary films. The formation of various silica superstructures at the film surface was attributed to a combination of diffusio-phoresis and electrostatic interactions between particles, as supported by Brownian dynamics simulations.

Different modes of heat transfer and crystallization in a drop of NaCl solution: The influence of key factors on the crystallization rate and the heat transfer coefficient

S. Y. Misyura

Summary: Experimental studies on evaporation, crystallization, and heat transfer in a droplet of NaCl/H2O solution have shown that supersaturation and heating of the wall significantly affect the process. Four characteristic modes of evaporation and crystallization are distinguished, with the ratio of the crystallization rate to the evaporation rate being highly variable and regulated by Marangoni convection. The data obtained provide insights for the development of high-temperature crystallization concepts in the presence of intense Marangoni flow.

Unique surface patterns emerging during solidification of liquid metal alloys

Jianbo Tang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the emergence of highly ordered nanopatterns on the alloy surfaces during solidification in the Bi-Ga alloy system. The pattern-formation mechanisms involving surface-catalyzed heterogeneous nucleation were elucidated through a combination of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The dynamic nature and robustness of the phenomenon under different solidification conditions and for various alloy systems were further demonstrated, showing promising potential for surface- and nanoscale-based applications.

Investigation of Filter Cake Evolution in Carbonate Formation Using Polymer-Based Drilling Fluid

Musaab Magzoub et al.

Summary: The cross-linked polymer gel formed by PAM and PEI prevents drilling fluid loss and reduces the risk of formation damage, by creating a mature gel structure inside the formation's pores and on the rock's surface. This gel formula also decreases filtrate invasion and formation of internal filter cake, compared to water-based mud, thus minimizing the impact of lost circulation materials on formation damage.

Crystal critters: Self-ejection of crystals from heated, superhydrophobic surfaces

Samantha A. McBride et al.

Summary: This study explores a curious phenomenon in which crystals self-eject from heated, nanotextured superhydrophobic materials during evaporation of saline water drops, thus preventing crystal fouling. The cooperative effects of crystallization, evaporative flows, and nanoscale effects contribute to this unusual phenomenon. Insights gained from confinement-driven evaporative crystallization could be applied for antifouling, drop-based fluidic machines, and even self-propulsion.
