Gamma rhythms in the visual cortex: functions and mechanisms

Chuanliang Han et al.

Summary: Gamma-band activity, peaking around 30-100 Hz in the brain, has been intensively studied but its cognitive functions and neural mechanisms remain unclear. Experimental studies show that gamma rhythms are stochastic and vary with visual stimuli, with recent research revealing multiple rhythms coexisting in V1 with different origins across species. Despite challenges, progress in computational studies offers hope for unlocking the mystery of gamma rhythms in the visual cortex.

The Generation and Modulation of Distinct Gamma Oscillations with Local, Horizontal, and Feedback Connections in the Primary Visual Cortex: A Model Study on Large-Scale Networks

Chuanliang Han et al.

Summary: The study examines the relationship between different types of gamma oscillations in the brain, revealing that long-range horizontal connections and feedback connections play different roles in generating and modulating gamma oscillations. This provides a new framework for studying information integration functions.

Multiple gamma rhythms carry distinct spatial frequency information in primary visual cortex

Chuanliang Han et al.

Summary: The study found 3 narrowband gamma rhythms in the primary visual cortex (V1) that processed distinct spatial frequency signals and had different neural origins. These gamma rhythms showed better performance in discriminating the edge and surface of simple objects, reflecting the neural dynamics of processing different SF information in the visual system.

Electroencephalography in Assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Review

Maja Milovanovic et al.

Summary: EEG can enhance understanding of ASD neurophysiology, with epilepsy and ASD comorbidity rates between 5 and 46%. The relationship between epilepsy and ASD, including causal mechanisms and effects on intellectual disability, is still unknown. Abnormalities in GABAergic function may contribute to both conditions.

Tactile cortical responses and association with tactile reactivity in young children on the autism spectrum

Svenja Espenhahn et al.

Summary: The study found elevated tactile reactivity in children on the autism spectrum, but no significant differences in early and mid-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials compared to neurotypical children. However, children with autism showed faster processing speed in later tactile information processing, and enhanced early neural responses were associated with greater tactile reactivity.
