In (deficit) schizophrenia, a general cognitive decline partly mediates the effects of neuro-immune and neuro-oxidative toxicity on the symptomatome and quality of life

Michael Maes et al.

Summary: The study found that a general factor underlies impairments in CANTAB, VFT, WLM, True Recall, and MMSE scores, reflecting a general cognitive decline (G-CoDe) comprising deficits in various cognitive domains. The G-CoDe is linked to neurotoxic pathways and explains variance in symptoms and quality of life in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia phenomenology revisited: positive and negative symptoms are strongly related reflective manifestations of an underlying single trait indicating overall severity of schizophrenia

Abbas F. Almulla et al.

Summary: The study found significant associations between negative and PHEM symptoms, formal thought disorders (FTD) and psychomotor retardation (PMR) in major neurocognitive psychosis (MNP) or deficit schizophrenia. A single latent trait underlies these domains, reflecting the overall severity of schizophrenia and MNP.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia-like symptoms are an integral component of the phenome of schizophrenia: neuro-immune and opioid system correlates

Rana Fadhil Mousa et al.

Summary: Physiosomatic symptoms play an important role in the phenomenology of schizophrenia. Higher scores of physiosomatic symptoms in schizophrenia patients are associated with increased levels of psychosis, hostility, excitement, formal thought disorders, psychomotor retardation, and negative symptoms. The variance in physiosomatic symptoms score is influenced by cognitive tasks, IL-10, IL-6, and other markers. Neural network analysis identified top predictors of physiosomatic symptoms including IL-6, HMGB1, education level, MOR, KOR, and IL-10. Immune pathways, neural markers, and alterations in the endogenous opioid system appear to contribute to the physiosomatic symptoms in schizophrenia.

High Mobility Group Protein 1 and Dickkopf-Related Protein 1 in Schizophrenia and Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia: Associations With Interleukin-6, Symptom Domains, and Neurocognitive Impairments

Arafat Hussein Al-Dujaili et al.

Summary: The study found significantly higher levels of HMGB1, DKK1, IL-6, and CCL11 in SCZ patients. NRTT patients had significantly higher levels of IL-6 and DDKI compared to PRTT and controls, with IL-10 being higher in NRTT than in controls. HMGB1, IL-6, and CCL11 explained a large part of the variance in PHEMN symptoms and formal thought disorders, while most neurocognitive functions were predicted by HMGB1, DDKI, and CCL11.

Diagnostic Task Specific Activations in Functional MRI and Aberrant Connectivity of Insula with Middle Frontal Gyrus Can Inform the Differential Diagnosis of Psychosis

Drozdstoy Stoyanov et al.

Summary: This study utilized a novel design combining clinical self-assessment scales with fMRI to investigate connectivity patterns and structural differences in patients with schizophrenia and depression. The results suggested distinct activation clusters and connectivity differences in the two clinical entities, indicating potential aberrant networks underlying behavioral abnormalities.

How to construct neuroscience-informed psychiatric classification? Towards nomothetic networks psychiatry

Drozdstoy Stoyanov et al.

Summary: Psychiatry is in a state of crisis, with various competing approaches to psychiatric illness and unreliable current classifications. The new nomothetic network psychiatry approach utilizes machine learning to build data-driven causal models of mental illness.

Inflammatory and Oxidative Pathways Are New Drug Targets in Multiple Episode Schizophrenia and Leaky Gut, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and C1q Immune Complexes Are Additional Drug Targets in First Episode Schizophrenia

Michael Maes et al.

Summary: This study revealed differences in disease mechanisms and deterioration factors between deficit schizophrenia and multiple episode schizophrenia. By investigating and analyzing different pathways, potential factors contributing to the deterioration of patients' behavior, cognition, physical, and psychosocial functions were identified.
