Outcomes of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis After Liver Transplantation: An Updated Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Jie Ning Yong et al.

Summary: This study conducted a time-dependent survival analysis comparing the survival of liver transplant recipients with and without nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The overall survival was comparable between NASH and non-NASH patients after liver transplantation. However, NASH patients with higher model for end-stage liver disease scores had worse overall survival.

Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial of a Mailed Outreach Strategy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance

Summary: Mailed outreach for HCC surveillance significantly increased semiannual surveillance and improved proportion of time covered by surveillance in patients with cirrhosis. The intervention effect was consistent across most examined subgroups. Continued follow-up is needed to assess the impact on downstream outcomes.

Comparative efficacy of an optimal exam between ultrasound versus abbreviated MRI for HCC screening in NAFLD cirrhosis: A prospective study

Daniel Q. Huang et al.

Summary: This prospective multicenter study compared liver visualization scores of ultrasound (US) and abbreviated hepatobiliary phase (HBP) magnetic resonance imaging (AMRI) in participants with NAFLD cirrhosis. The study found that US had a higher proportion of severe visualisation limitations compared to AMRI. Obesity was identified as an independent predictor for severe visualisation limitation on US. The study suggests reporting US adequacy in clinical studies and considering AMRI for HCC screening when US is suboptimal.

Clinical characteristics, surveillance, treatment allocation, and outcomes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-related hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Darren Jun Hao Tan et al.

Summary: Compared with hepatocellular carcinoma due to other causes, patients with NAFLD-related hepatocellular carcinoma are older, have higher BMI, and are more likely to have metabolic comorbidities and cardiovascular disease. The surveillance rate is lower, but the proportion of patients without cirrhosis is higher.

Changing global epidemiology of liver cancer from 2010 to 2019: NASH is the fastest growing cause of liver cancer

Daniel Q. Huang et al.

Summary: Liver cancer epidemiology is changing due to factors such as increasing alcohol consumption, rising obesity rates, and advancements in hepatitis B and C treatment. The Global Burden of Disease study estimated global and regional trends in liver cancer burden, revealing a 25% increase in liver cancer deaths between 2010 and 2019. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and alcohol were found to have the fastest growing death rates, while hepatitis B and C showed declines. Urgent measures are needed globally to address metabolic risk factors and slow the growing burden of NASH-associated liver cancer, particularly in the Americas.

Global and regional long-term survival following resection for HCC in the recent decade: A meta-analysis of 110 studies

Rosyli F. Reveron-Thornton et al.

Summary: Surgical resection is a major treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the outcomes may vary by region and time period. This systematic review and meta-analysis found that 1-year survival after surgery is excellent, but 5-year survival and recurrence-free survival are still poor. Patients in Asia have better survival rates, and those with hepatitis B virus have higher recurrence-free survival. However, there has been no significant improvement in survival rates over time.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
