Towards an SI-Traceable Reference Measurement System for Seven Serum Apolipoproteins Using Bottom-Up Quantitative Proteomics: Conceptual Approach Enabled by Cross-Disciplinary/Cross-Sector Collaboration

Christa M. Cobbaert et al.

Summary: Current dyslipidemia management in patients with ASCVD is based on traditional serum lipids, but research suggests that serum apolipoproteins may provide better insight into the root causes of dyslipidemia. Strategies for accurate testing of serum apolipoproteins should be developed in advance for future adoption in precision medicine. Recent discoveries in basic science and translational medicine have paved the way for the development of a multiplexed Reference Measurement System for apolipoproteins.

Non-HDL-C/TG ratio indicates significant underestimation of calculated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) better than TG level: a study on the reliability of mathematical formulas used for LDL-C estimation

Agnieszka Cwiklinska et al.

Summary: This study compared calculated LDL-C values using different formulas with measured LDL-C values, finding that the Martin/Hopkins, Vujovic, and Sampson formulas were more accurate than the Friedewald formula. It was suggested to implement risk categories based on non-HDL-C/TG ratio, and for samples with a non-HDL-C/TG ratio of <1.2, LDL-C levels should be independently measured rather than calculated.

Apolipoprotein Mimetic Peptides: Potential New Therapies for Cardiovascular Diseases

Anna Wolska et al.

Summary: Since the breakthrough of using insulin to treat diabetic patients in the 1920s, there has been a growing interest in developing various proteins and their peptide mimetics for treating medical disorders. Currently, there are over 60 approved peptides for human use and more than 150 peptides in clinical development. This review mainly focuses on peptide mimetics related to cardiovascular diseases, discussing the biochemistry, design, and clinical trials of peptides based on apoA-I, apoE, and apoC-II, while also addressing the limitations and challenges in developing apolipoprotein mimetic peptides into new drugs.

Association of Increased Remnant Cholesterol and the Risk of Coronary Artery Disease: A Retrospective Study

Wang Kexin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a significant association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and coronary artery disease (CAD), with RC levels being more reflective of CAD risk than LDL-C and non-HDL-C. An interaction relationship between RC and age, gender, hypertension, and diabetes in CAD was observed, but the study did not find a relationship between non-HDL-C and CAD.

Remnant cholesterol predicts cardiovascular disease beyond LDL and ApoB: a primary prevention study

Renato Quispe et al.

Summary: High remnant cholesterol (RC) levels are associated with ASCVD in individuals without known ASCVD, independent of traditional risk factors, LDL-C, and apoB levels. The discordant group with high RC/low LDL-C, but not the low RC/high LDL-C group, showed increased ASCVD risk compared to the concordant group.

Summary: Recent research supports a causal association between triglycerides, triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, and their remnants with cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their impact on heart health. Targeting levels of triglycerides and their remnants may potentially reduce the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.

Lipid measurements in the management of cardiovascular diseases: Practical recommendations a scientific statement from the national lipid association writing group

Peter W. F. Wilson et al.

Summary: The measurement of lipoproteins is crucial for managing patients with coronary heart disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Guidelines for lipid measurements have evolved to optimize cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention. Screening with nonfasting lipids is acceptable, and the use of non-HDL-C and alternative methods for estimating LDL-C are recommended, especially for patients with specific lipid profiles. Harmonization of advanced lipid measurement methods and timely follow-up after changes in lipid treatment are also emphasized for better clinical outcomes.
