The dominant North Pacific atmospheric circulation patterns and their relations to Pacific SSTs: historical simulations and future projections in the IPCC AR6 models

Shangfeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the leading modes of North Pacific atmospheric variability are closely related to surface temperatures, ENSO, PDO, VM, etc., but there are deficiencies in simulating the impact of winter ENSO on NPO among models. Under climate change, the connections of AL with ENSO and PDO remain robust, but the relationship between NPO and VM shows more variability.

Performance of the IPCC AR6 models in simulating the relation of the western North Pacific subtropical high to the spring northern tropical Atlantic SST

Shangfeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the connection between spring northern tropical Atlantic (NTA) sea surface temperature (SST) and following summer western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) across 20 coupled models of the IPCC AR6. The models show a diverse relationship between NTA SST and WNPSH, with differences attributed to variations in the climatological mean Indian Ocean (IO) precipitation. Models with large mean IO precipitation tend to provide a conducive environment for IO SST warming, resulting in significant impacts on the WNPSH.

Two Tropical Routes for the Remote Influence of the Northern Tropical Atlantic on the Indo-Western Pacific Summer Climate

Yuhei Takaya et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of high sea surface temperatures in the northern tropical Atlantic on the summer climate of the Indo-western Pacific in 2010. The results suggest that these high temperatures had a considerable impact on weather patterns in the region via tropical routes and contributed to anomalous conditions.

Origins of the Excessive Westward Extension of ENSO SST Simulated in CMIP5 and CMIP6 Models

Wenping Jiang et al.

Summary: The excessive westward extension of ENSO SST in CMIP5 and CMIP6 models is primarily due to the simulated cold tongue strength in the equatorial western Pacific. With the overall improvement in the EWP cold tongue from CMIP5 to CMIP6, the excessive westward extension bias of ENSO SST in CMIP6 models is reduced relative to those in CMIP5 models.

Restored relationship between ENSO and Indian summer monsoon rainfall around 1999/2000

Xianke Yang et al.

Summary: It was found that since 1999/2000, there has been a clear restoration of the relationship between ENSO and ISMR, closely linked to the interdecadal transition of ENSO evolution and sea surface temperature anomalies over the tropical Atlantic. This finding should be considered in efforts to improve ISMR prediction.
