Widening our Focus: Characterizing Socioeconomic and Racial Disparities in Congenital Heart Disease

Tara Karamlou et al.

Summary: Socioeconomic and racial disparities impact outcomes in patients with congenital heart disease, with Black patients facing higher mortality rates. The relationship between mortality and patient neighborhood household income is complex, with both higher and lower values associated with increased risk. Specific hospitals may have developed care pathways to mitigate risk among Black neonates, leading to longer hospital stays but potentially improving outcomes.

Associations Between Socioeconomic Context and Congenital Heart Disease Related Outcomes in Adolescents and Adults

Alexandra R. Tillman et al.

Summary: The study found that adult and adolescent patients with congenital heart defects residing in the most deprived quintile had significantly higher odds of hospitalizations, emergency department visits, cardiac surgeries, and major adverse cardiac events compared to those in the least deprived quintile. Rates of hospitalizations, emergency department admissions, and cardiac surgeries were also elevated in the most deprived quintile. However, mortality rates did not show significant differences across quintiles. These findings indicate significant health equity issues for individuals with congenital heart defects based on area-based deprivation.

Health anxiety among adults with congenital heart disease

Alexandra Roseman et al.

Summary: Adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) may experience anxiety related to their medical condition, including heart-focused anxiety. Health anxiety may occur across the lifespan of individuals with CHD. Studies have found that heart-focused anxiety is linked with older age, trait anxiety, perceived parental overprotection and greater CHD complexity.

Summary: This study found that youth with congenital heart disease (CHD) of all severities have significantly higher odds of anxiety, depression, and ADHD compared to those without CHD. Children with complex CHD had the highest odds of diagnosis or treatment for anxiety and/or depression. Minority and uninsured youth were significantly less likely to be diagnosed or treated for these conditions.

Development of Down Syndrome Research Over the Last Decades-What Healthcare and Education Professionals Need to Know

Karin Windsperger et al.

Summary: Down syndrome (DS) is the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder with known genetic causes, characterized by intellectual disability and a high likelihood of early onset Alzheimer's disease. While traditionally viewed as a homogenous group, modern research reveals a broad variability in symptoms across DS, indicating heterogeneity. However, prenatal counseling often lacks awareness of internal variations within DS, providing only vague information to expectant parents.

Socioeconomic status and child psychopathology in the United States: A meta-analysis of population-based studies

Matthew Peverill et al.

Summary: Children raised in families with low socioeconomic status are more likely to exhibit symptoms of psychopathology, with factors such as low family income, education level, and receipt of public assistance showing small to moderate associations with higher levels of childhood psychopathology. However, the strength of this association and the specific indices of SES most strongly associated with childhood psychopathology can vary across different populations and communities, highlighting the need for further research on potential intervention targets.
