Trinuclear salphen-chromium(III)chloride complexes as catalysts for the alternating copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides

Lei Cui et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that trinuclear chromium complexes of salicylaldimine, in conjunction with a nucleophilic cocatalyst, are efficient catalysts for the copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides, producing perfectly alternating polyesters. By investigating the distance between chromium species, it was found that trinuclear salphenCr(III)-complexes with distances of approximately 7.3 angstrom exhibit high catalytic activity even at low catalyst loadings. Additionally, in situ infrared spectroscopy studies suggest that the activation energy of the trinuclear Cr(III)-salphen catalyst is lower than that of the corresponding mononuclear catalyst due to an intramolecular synergistic effect among the metal atoms.

Enantioselective, Stereoconvergent Resolution Copolymerization of Racemic cis-Internal Epoxides and Anhydrides

Guang-Hui He et al.

Summary: Unprecedented enantioselective resolution copolymerization of racemic cis-internal epoxides and anhydrides was achieved through dinuclear aluminum complexes, yielding optically active polyesters with two contiguous stereogenic centers. Unexpected stereoconvergence was observed in this process, with the selectivity factor for copolymer formation significantly exceeding the kinetic resolution coefficient based on unreacted substrates. Catalytic activity and copolymer enantioselectivity were strongly influenced by the ligand set's phenolate ortho-substituents, as well as the axial linker and its chirality. An enantiopure binaphthol-linked bimetallic Al-III complex allowed stereoconvergent access to stereoregular semi-crystalline polyesters and concomitant kinetic resolution of epoxide substrates.

Enantioselective Resolution Copolymerization of Racemic 2,3-Disubstituted cis-Epoxides with CO2 Mediated by Binuclear Cobalt(III) Catalyst

Yan-Lan Liu et al.

Summary: The enantioselective resolution copolymerization of racemic aromatic 2,3-disubstituted cis-epoxides and CO2 using enantiopure dinuclear cobalt(III) complexes as catalyst yielded polycarbonates with completely alternating structure and good enantioselectivity in the range of 70% to 97% ee. The copolymer selectivity is correlated well with the Hammett substituent constant, and the highest polymer selectivity of 98% was found in the system using the epoxides bearing an electron-donating group on the benzene ring.

Photoinduced Reversible Semicrystalline-to-Amorphous State Transitions of Stereoregular Azopolyesters

Jie Li et al.

Summary: The synthesis of isotactic azobenzene-based polyesters via enantioselective copolymerization was reported, showing reversible trans-to-cis and cis-to-trans photoisomerization of the azobenzene groups. Mixing isotactic trans-polyesters with different enantiomeric configurations resulted in crystalline stereocomplexes with different crystalline behavior. Photoinduced reversible transitions between semicrystalline and amorphous states were observed in various stereocomplexes of isotactic trans-azopolyesters.
