Strategies for efficient photothermal therapy at mild temperatures: Progresses and challenges

Peng Gao et al.

Summary: Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a method of eliminating tumors through hyperthermia induced by photothermal agents (PTAs) under laser irradiation. However, current methods require long, frequent, and high-power density laser irradiation, which can cause damage to the skin and healthy tissues. In contrast, low-temperature photothermal therapy (LTPTT) can inhibit tumors through mild hyperthermia, making it more attractive and feasible. This article systematically summarizes the strategies for achieving LTPTT, introduces various organic and inorganic materials used as PTAs, and discusses the challenges and future perspectives in this field.

Mdm2 phosphorylation by Akt regulates the p53 response to oxidative stress to promote cell proliferation and tumorigenesis

Loretah Chibaya et al.

Summary: The phosphorylation of Mdm2 by Akt was found to reduce p53 levels and prevent senescence in cells exposed to oxidative stress. This resulted in the promotion of lung cancers driven by Kras(G12D) and carcinogen-induced papilloma and hepatocellular carcinomas in mouse models of ROS-induced cancer. These findings highlight a unique physiological role for Akt-Mdm2-p53 signaling in regulating cell growth and tumorigenesis in response to oxidative stress.

CD44 Targeted Nanomaterials for Treatment of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Ghazal Nabil et al.

Summary: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a challenging and aggressive tumor with limited therapeutic options. Combination therapies, such as using apoptosis inducers and JAK/STAT3 inhibitors, have shown improvement in TNBC cell killing activity. CD44 targeted polymeric nanoparticles and Hyaluronic acid-tagged nanoparticles have enhanced drug activity and tumor accumulation, leading to improved therapeutic efficacy for TNBC treatment.

Combining NanoKnife with M1 oncolytic virus enhances anticancer activity in pancreatic cancer

Shuxin Sun et al.

Summary: NanoKnife, a nonthermal ablation technique, combined with M1 virus shows synergistic therapeutic efficacy in treating locally advanced pancreatic cancer, enhancing tumor inhibition and prolonging survival in immunocompetent mice. The combination promotes M1 infection, converting immune-silent tumors into immune-inflamed tumors and potentially improving prognosis for LAPC patients.

DNA-Chitosan Hydrogels: Formation, Properties, and Functionalization with Catalytic Nanoparticles

Kohki Morikawa et al.

Summary: DNA-chitosan hydrogels based on interpolyelectrolyte complexes were prepared by in situ charging of the polysaccharide in a DNA solution. The structure, stability, and ion absorption properties of the hydrogels strongly depended on the ratio between cationic and anionic counterparts, showing efficient absorption capacity towards metal ions. The metallized hydrogels exhibited catalytic activity in reducing various nitroaromatics, depending on the ratio of chitosan and DNA in the hydrogel.
