Selective Chemical Upcycling of Mixed Plastics Guided by a Thermally Stable Organocatalyst

Coralie Jehanno et al.

Summary: Chemical recycling of plastic waste offers a greener alternative to landfill and incineration, with the potential for selective and sequential depolymerization of specific plastics to produce high added value molecules. This method showcases the promise of catalytic depolymerization in providing solutions for environmental consequences of increased plastic waste.

Highly efficient application of Mg/Al layered double oxides catalysts in the methanolysis of polycarbonate

Wenwen Huang et al.

Summary: The study explored the chemical recycling of bisphenol A from polycarbonate methanolysis using Mg/Al layered double hydroxides and their corresponding layered double oxides as heterogeneous catalysts. Mg/Al-LDOs showed better catalytic activity than Mg/Al-LDHs, with 100% PC conversion and over 98% BPA yield achieved using Mg3Al-LDO as a catalyst at 110 degrees C for 1.0 h. The solid catalyst could be easily separated and reused after calcinations. The mechanism was described through various analyses, and the kinetics of PC methanolysis indicated a pseudo-first-order reaction with an activation energy of 92.41 kJ/mol.

Instantaneous hydrolysis of PET bottles: an efficient pathway for the chemical recycling of condensation polymers

Jose Jonathan Rubio Arias et al.

Summary: Finding ways to restore the environmental balance disrupted by the increase in plastic commodities is urgent. Reducing the amount of plastic waste and petrochemical resources used for constant replacement of single-use plastics is crucial. Chemical recycling offers a feasible alternative to reclaim monomers, with the key being the establishment of a simple, fast, and cost-effective procedure.

Chemolytic depolymerisation of PET: a review

Elaine Barnard et al.

Summary: Developing new methods for plastic recycling is crucial for reducing CO2 emissions and improving resource efficiency. Chemical recycling, which involves depolymerization to reclaim original components, is gaining attention as a viable route. Lowering the energy barrier for depolymerization through catalysts under mild conditions is a key focus of research in this field.

Low-energy catalytic methanolysis of poly(ethyleneterephthalate)

Duong Dinh Pham et al.

Summary: In this study, a low-energy catalytic route for methanolysis to convert PET resin to DMT was developed, achieving high DMT selectivity at ambient temperature by controlling the moisture level. The PET depolymerization apparently proceeded through two series of reaction steps, and the degradation of PET had a relatively low activation energy of 66.5 kJ mol(-1), which was accountable for catalytic methanolysis of PET at ambient conditions.
