Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and its effects on human health: An overeview

Manthar Ali Mallah et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemical contaminants of environmental significance. PAH pollution mainly comes from anthropogenic sources and can pose a significant threat to human health. Long-term exposure to PAHs can lead to tumor development in multiple organs and increase the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown a relationship between PAH exposure, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis.

Impact of nutrient removal on microbial community in bioretention facilities with different underlying types/built times at field scale

Zhaoxin Zhang et al.

Summary: As the bioretention facilities are extensively used in the construction of Sponge City in China, they have proven to be effective in controlling urban non-point source pollutants. This study investigated the influences of different underlying types/built times of three bioretention facilities on the microbial community. The results showed that the bioretention tank (BT) had the highest nutrient load reduction rate and the lowest microbial diversity. The study suggests that future design and construction of bioretention facilities should consider the risk of nutrient impact and changes in microbial diversity.

Microbial diversity and function in response to occurrence and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in combined sewer overflows

Summary: Understanding the environmental behavior of PAHs in CSOs is crucial for managing PAH pollution in urban areas. This study analyzed the sources and effects of 16 PAHs in CSOs, finding that tetracyclic PAHs had the highest proportion and exhibited a first flush effect. Vehicular emissions were identified as the main source of particulate PAHs in CSOs, impacting river sediment PAH levels and specific microbial populations.

Assessment on the cumulative effect of pollutants and the evolution of micro-ecosystems in bioretention systems with different media

Zhaoxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the accumulation of pollutants in modified-media bioretention systems can lead to a decrease in beneficial microorganisms, affecting the balance of the ecosystem. To ensure the long-term efficient and stable operation of the modified-media bioretention system, it is necessary to balance pollutant removal efficiency and cumulative effects.

Enhanced removal of sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline in bioretention cells amended with activated carbon and zero-valent iron: System performance and microbial community

Yan Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that activated carbon modified bioretention cells showed significantly higher removal efficiency of antibiotics compared to traditional bioretention cells, especially in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Antibiotics were removed above 99% regardless of types and initial concentrations, outperforming the conventional bioretention cells. Changes in microbial community composition were observed when exposed to antibiotics, with activated carbon layers alleviating negative impacts on microbial biodiversity. Further research is needed to improve the retention of antibiotic resistance genes in bioretention cells.

Bioretention systems for stormwater management: Recent advances and future prospects

Kuppusamy Vijayaraghavan et al.

Summary: Bioretention is a popular stormwater management strategy used in urban environments to combat water quality and hydrological impacts of stormwater. Most research contributions come from a few countries and research groups, leading to operational failures in diverse geographical locations. Future research needs to consider bioretention design in different climates and address current technical challenges.

Seasonal performance of field bioretention systems in retaining phosphorus in a cold climate: Influence of prolonged road salt application

Jaeleah Goor et al.

Summary: The study found that in cold climates, the spring release of phosphorus from bioretention systems is influenced by high salt loading, mainly in the form of soluble reactive P. This has important implications for improving stormwater management and investigating the impact of road salt on P mobility in bioretention systems.

Removal of rubber, bitumen and other microplastic particles from stormwater by a gross pollutant trap-bioretention treatment train

Katharina Lange et al.

Summary: This study found that stormwater treatment trains can effectively remove rubber, bitumen, and other microplastic particles from highway runoff, with filter cells playing a major role in this removal. The Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) did not significantly reduce microplastic concentrations, highlighting a weakness in the system design. Both vegetated bioretention cells and non-vegetated sand filters performed similarly in removing microplastic particles.
