Electrochemical oxidation of PFOA and PFOS in landfill leachates at low and highly boron-doped diamond electrodes

Mattia Pierpaoli et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that electrolysis on boron-doped diamond electrodes is effective in removing PFASs, specifically perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS), from landfill leachates. The presence of long-chain intermediates during electrolysis differed significantly between high and low boron doping concentrations, indicating greater sensitivity of low-doped BDD to the long-chain intermediates of PFOA. This suggests potential for using BDD-electrolysis for PFAS removal despite the presence of competing components in landfill leachates.

Influence of Water Concentrations of Perfluoroalkyl Acids (PFAAs) on Their Size-Resolved Enrichment in Nascent Sea Spray Aerosols

Bo Sha et al.

Summary: Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are enriched in sea spray aerosols (SSA) with a strong linear relationship to water concentration. The particle surface-area-to-volume ratio is a key predictor of PFAAs enrichment in supermicron particles, while the differences in enrichment behaviors between submicron and supermicron particles are likely due to different production mechanisms. Seawater concentrations of PFAAs have little influence on enrichment factors (EFs) in SSA emissions.

Species- and Tissue-Specific Avian Chronic Toxicity Values for Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) and a Binary Mixture of PFOS and Perfluorohexane Sulfonate

Nicole M. Dennis et al.

Summary: This study established species- and tissue-specific PFAS chronic toxicity values and compared them with previously reported toxicity reference values, revealing higher bioaccumulation factors in birds exposed via water and suggesting a comprehensive examination of all probable sources of oral exposure for accurate derivation of toxicity reference values for ecological risk assessment in the future.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water and sediments from two urban watersheds in Nevada, USA

Xuelian Bai et al.

Summary: The study measured 17 PFAS in surface water and sediments from various locations in Nevada. Short-chain PFAS were more prevalent in water, while long-chain PFAS were more detectable in sediments. Las Vegas Wash water had significantly higher PFAS levels compared to water samples from the Truckee River.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Transport from Groundwater to Streams near a PFAS Manufacturing Facility in North Carolina, USA

Marie-Amelie Petre et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the transport of PFAS from groundwater to tributaries of the Cape Fear River near a PFAS manufacturing facility in North Carolina, USA. The results indicate that PFAS from groundwater enter the Cape Fear River through tributaries, potentially causing long-term surface water contamination and impacting downstream drinking water supplies.
