Biochar amendment impacts on microbial community structures and biological and enzyme activities in a weathered tropical sandy loam

Emmanuel Amoakwah et al.

Summary: This study found that biochar application in a tropical ecosystem can significantly increase microbial biomass and activity, as well as enhance soil enzyme activity and related biological properties. The treatment with 30-ton biochar ha(-1) had the most pronounced effects on the composition of microbial communities, with a higher fungal to bacterial ratio and increased carbon sequestration potential.

In situ characterization of functional groups of biochar in pyrolysis of cellulose

Mengjiao Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of functional groups of biochar at different heating rates, revealing that the abundance of -OH, C\\H, and C_O in biochar peaked at 410-450 degrees Celsius before decreasing with further temperature increase. The formation of =C-H was closely correlated with the removal of -C-H and -OH, while cracking of C_O was a decisive factor for the formation of C_C in biochar.

Biochar surface functional groups as affected by biomass feedstock, biochar composition and pyrolysis temperature

Rainer Janu et al.

Summary: This study tested 92 types of biochar to determine the relationship between its characteristics and infrared sorption. The results showed that parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, H/C ratio, specific surface area, and ash fraction were key factors affecting the functional group signals. Regression and PCA analysis were able to explain a significant portion of data variance.

Biochars and Engineered Biochars for Water and Soil Remediation: A Review

Tariqul Islam et al.

Summary: Biochars are ecofriendly and multifunctional materials for remediation of water and soils, with engineered biochars showing better performance due to enlarged surface areas and surface functional groups. The main mechanisms for pollutant removal involve adsorption of inorganic pollutants and uptake of organic pollutants, driving forces including ion exchange, precipitation, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. Further pilot and field scale investigations are required to assess the practical applicability of biochars and engineered biochars in environmental remediation.
