Understanding the fragmentation of microplastics into nano-plastics and removal of nano/microplastics from wastewater using membrane, air flotation and nano-ferrofluid processes

Biplob Kumar Pramanik et al.

Summary: The study found that mechanical impellers could fragment MPs into NPs of various sizes. The air flotation process showed efficient removal of certain plastics, and increasing the surfactant dose improved removal efficiency. The removal efficiency of NPs/MPs by the ferrofluid system depended on solution characteristics, and membrane processes were highly effective in removing NPs/MPs fragment particles.

Green synthesis of Fe-ZnO nanoparticles with improved sunlight photocatalytic performance for polyethylene film deterioration and bacterial inactivation

Sze-Mun Lam et al.

Summary: Fe-ZnO nanoparticles synthesized through a green method exhibit high photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial effects on LDPE plastic and E. coli. The results confirm the enhanced optical absorption and suppression of photogenerated charge carriers by Fe-ZnO, contributing to the improvement of plastic degradation efficiency.

Prevalence and characteristics of microplastics present in the street dust collected from Chennai metropolitan city, India

Arunkumar Patchaiyappan et al.

Summary: This study assessed microplastic pollution in road dust in Chennai, India for the first time, revealing a high average content of microplastics. The majority of quantified microplastics were fragments, and Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS analysis identified various polymer types and trace elements.

Understanding the fate of nano-plastics in wastewater treatment plants and their removal using membrane processes

Anika Amir Mohana et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have become a significant environmental concern due to their adverse effects on water environments. Wastewater treatment plants are identified as major sources of nanoparticle generation, primarily through the mechanism of cracking larger plastic debris. Current membrane processes are ineffective for nanoparticle removal, leading to the need for developing a bio-nanofiltration process as an alternative method. This process can produce nanoparticle-free water for safe discharge.

Understanding the fate and control of road dust-associated microplastics in stormwater

Sirajum Monira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources, removal methods, and technical challenges of microplastic pollution in the water environment. It is found that constructed wetlands have limited effectiveness in removing MPs, leading to untreated stormwater releasing significant amounts of MPs into open water bodies. Future opportunities include the installation of membrane- or flotation-based technologies in the outlet of constructed wetlands for enhanced removal efficiency of MPs.
