Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi conducting the hyphosphere bacterial orchestra

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: More than two-thirds of terrestrial plants form a symbiotic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi to acquire nutrients. The hyphal exudates of AM fungi not only contain carbon-rich compounds, but also promote bacterial growth and activity, and influence microbial community structure, leading to changes in organic nutrient cycling. This makes the hyphosphere an important but often overlooked functional zone in ecosystems.

Bioremediation perspective of historically contaminated sediment with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Snezana Maletic et al.

Summary: This study compared the influence of different aerobic conditions on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) degradation and found that biostimulation (BS) successfully stimulated the growth of indigenous bacteria in soil. The results obtained from XAD-4 extraction showed a good correlation with the degraded amounts, suggesting that XAD-4 extraction could be a simplified, easier, and lower cost method for bioavailability assessment.

Summary: The addition of phenol can reduce the critical micelle concentration of biosurfactants and enhance the solubilization of PAHs by forming mixed micelles. The bioavailability of PAHs in sludge significantly increased when phenol and biosurfactant were added simultaneously. Phenol also improved the degradation of PAHs by Stenotrophomonas sp. Spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the water-sediment system near chemical industry parks in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Tianqi Jia et al.

Summary: The distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water and sediment samples around the industrial parks in the Yangtze River Delta are strongly influenced by industrial emissions, with high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs dominating in sediment and low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs dominating in water. The ecological risk assessment indicated that most sites were at low to medium risk, but one site posed a high risk.

Differences in the effects of single and mixed species of AMF on the growth and oxidative stress defense in Lolium perenne exposed to hydrocarbons

Monika Malicka et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of single and mixed-species AMF inocula from a contaminated environment on the growth, oxidative stress, and antioxidative enzyme activity in Lolium perenne on a substrate contaminated with phenol/PAHs. Single AMF species significantly enhanced plant growth while mixed-species AMF inocula showed varying levels of oxidative stress and antioxidative enzyme activity. Among the studied AMF species, F. caledonium exhibited the highest tolerance to contaminants and promoted plant growth effectively.

Rhizosphere effects of woody plants on soil biogeochemical processes: A meta-analysis

Dayong Gan et al.

Summary: Rhizosphere effects play a crucial role in controlling soil biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems, particularly in belowground carbon and nitrogen processes. The positive effects of rhizosphere on various variables were consistent, with differences observed in the impact on soil nitrate-N between arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal associations. The variation in rhizosphere effects on carbon and net nitrogen mineralization rates was mainly influenced by bulk soil properties rather than plant functional types and climatic factors.
