Metabolomic profiling reveals the intestinal toxicity of different length of microplastic fibers on zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Yanping Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic fibers can cause intestinal damage and toxicity in zebrafish, with longer fibers producing more serious effects. Metabolomics analysis revealed that microplastic fibers can up-regulate glycerophospholipids metabolism, exacerbating oxidative damage and inflammation, while down-regulating fatty acyls metabolism related to nutritional deficiency.

Acquiring an evolutionary perspective in marine ecotoxicology to tackle emerging concerns in a rapidly changing ocean

Araceli Rodriguez-Romero et al.

Summary: The marine environment is constantly being polluted by tens of thousands of anthropogenic chemicals and wastes, leading to a need for a deeper understanding of the effects on natural ecosystems. Current research often focuses on short-term responses to stressors, lacking an evolutionary perspective through multigenerational studies. Addressing whether marine organisms can acclimate or adapt to a rapidly changing chemical environment is crucial for accurately predicting the risks of pollution in the ocean.

A multigenerational approach can detect early Cd pollution in Chironomus riparius

Halina Binde Doria et al.

Summary: This study investigated early Cd contamination across five generations of the model organism Chironomus riparius using spiked water exposure scenario. Results showed that exposure to brief and low Cd concentrations can affect all measured endpoints, with initial Cd pollution detected after just five consecutive generations. Importantly, fertility was greatly impaired at 100 μg/L of Cd after three generations. PGR calculation proved to be a sensitive tool for monitoring early pollution of Cd, and no adaptation to Cd was observed over five generations.

Oxidative damage and decreased aerobic energy production due to ingestion of polyethylene microplastics by Chironomus riparius (Diptera) larvae

Carlos J. M. Silva et al.

Summary: This study found that dipteran larvae exposed to different sizes of polyethylene microplastics exhibited varying degrees of ingestion, leading to oxidative damage and reduced aerobic energy production, ultimately impacting their physiology and fitness.

Evaluation of the potential toxicity of UV-weathered virgin polyamide microplastics to non-biting midge Chironomus riparius

Alla Khosrovyan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxicity of virgin polyamide microplastics and UV-weathered virgin polyamide microplastics on Chironomus riparius. The results show that UV weathering negatively affected the development of the larvae, while the virgin polyamide microplastics may not have long-term hazard to Chironomus riparius.

Single and combined effects of microplastics, pyrethroid and food resources on the life-history traits and microbiome of Chironomus riparius

Javier Edo Varg et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to microplastics and esfenvalerate negatively impacted the development and survival of Chironomus riparius, with effects varying between different food levels. Microbiome diversity was affected by microplastic exposure, while the relative abundances of top phyla were significantly impacted under high food levels. Lower food levels intensified the negative effects of exposure to microplastics, esfenvalerate, and their combination on life-history traits and microbiota.

Measuring mutagenicity in ecotoxicology: A case study of Cd exposure in Chironomus riparius

Halina Binde Doria et al.

Summary: The study proposed a new method to investigate the mutagenic effects of chronic cadmium exposure on Chironomus riparius. Results showed that cadmium exposure did not alter the basal germline mutation rate in C. riparius, suggesting that exposed organisms might experience other toxic effects. Furthermore, a practical pipeline for rapidly detecting germ cell mutagens in metazoans was established.

Altered gene expression in Chironomus riparius (insecta) in response to tire rubber and polystyrene microplasticsk

Victor Carrasco-Navarro et al.

Summary: The study found alterations in the expression of twelve genes in the aquatic insect Chironomus riparius after 36 h exposures to polystyrene and tire rubber microplastics, with overexpression of heat shock protein genes. The changes mainly occurred at higher concentrations of microplastics, but did not result in mortality.

Plastic Products Leach Chemicals That Induce In Vitro Toxicity under Realistic Use Conditions

Lisa Zimmermann et al.

Summary: The study investigated the toxicological and chemical profiles leaching into water from 24 everyday plastic products, finding that these products released a significant amount of unknown and potentially toxic chemicals. The results demonstrate that humans may be exposed to a much larger number of plastic chemicals than currently considered in public health science and policies.

Temperature dependence of spontaneous mutation rates

Ann-Marie Waldvogel et al.

Summary: Mutation serves as the source of genetic variation and foundation of evolution, with temperature directly impacting spontaneous mutation rates. The variation of mutation rates in response to environmental conditions follows a U-shaped pattern in relation to temperature. This has significant implications for mutation-dependent processes in molecular evolution, the evolution of mutation rates, and biodiversity evolution.

Immune response triggered by the ingestion of polyethylene microplastics in the dipteran larvae Chironomus riparius

Carlos J. M. Silva et al.

Summary: This study found that ingestion of polyethylene microplastics by Chironomus riparius larvae triggered a significant increase in basal PO activity at concentrations of 5 and 20 g PE-MPs kg-1, by 26% and 29% respectively, while total PO increased significantly by 48%, indicating de novo synthesis of proPO by organisms. The activation of the immune response is likely linked to damage in the epithelial cells of the gut lumen.

Microplastic contamination is ubiquitous in riparian soils and strongly related to elevation, precipitation and population density

Yanfei Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of microplastic contamination in soils along the Yangtze River, with higher levels of microplastics in subsoils compared to topsoils. Polyamide is the most commonly found polymer, and small microplastic particles dominate subsoil samples. Microfragments are the most common type of microplastic particle, and the contamination is positively correlated with population and precipitation but negatively correlated with elevation.

Microplastics in seawater and zooplankton: A case study from Terengganu estuary and offshore waters, Malaysia

Zakaria Daoud Taha et al.

Summary: The study reveals the widespread presence of microplastics in surface waters and the potential ingestion by zooplankton in the Terengganu Estuary to offshore waters in Malaysia. Fibres are the most common type of microplastic, with the highest density found in the estuary. Despite the increase in plastic pollution from anthropogenic activities, no significant correlation was observed between microplastic ingestion by zooplankton and microplastic concentration in the surface water in both areas.

Trends in the Application of Omics to Ecotoxicology and Stress Ecology

Joshua Niklas Ebner

Summary: Understanding how environmental changes impact the Earth's biome is crucial, with ecotoxicology and stress ecology playing key roles. Advancements in high-throughput omics technologies allow for measurement of molecular changes across different levels of biological organization. The literature trends suggest that more stressors are studied each year than species, highlighting the importance of cross-species comparisons in integrating omics information.
