Assessing multigenerational exposure to metals in elasmobranchs: Maternal transfer of contaminants in a yolk-sac viviparous species

Mariana F. Martins et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess maternal offloading of metals in the Brazilian guitarfish through determining metal concentrations in pregnant females and offspring over two generations. The study found that the transfer efficiency of different metals varied, with some metals not detected in uterine content samples. The relationships between maternal length and concentration, as well as transfer capacity, were not significant, suggesting continuous exposure of females and potentially inefficient offloading of metals.

Mercury in neonatal and juvenile blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus). Part II: Effects assessment

Sarah B. Norris et al.

Summary: Blacktip sharks in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly neonatal and juvenile individuals, were found to have elevated levels of mercury in their muscle, liver, kidney, and blood compared to other local shark species. Exposure to mercury potentially had negative effects on the livers of the blacktip sharks evaluated in the study, as indicated by histopathological analysis. Blood plasma chemistry and hematological effects were not correlated with tissue mercury levels in the sharks.

Summary: The study found that embryos of Pacific sharpnose sharks and speckled guitarfish have different levels of N-15 in different tissues compared to pregnant females, and the N-15 content in embryos is also related to their total length.

Telemetry-validated nitrogen stable isotope clocks identify ocean-to-estuarine habitat shifts in mobile organisms

Oliver N. Shipley et al.

Summary: By utilizing nitrogen stable isotope clocks, researchers were able to predict the time since immigration and timing of habitat shifts in migratory species like juvenile sand tiger sharks. Their study showed that these sharks predominantly arrived to estuarine habitats between June and July, with some individuals arriving as early as mid-May. The isotopically inferred arrival estimates were validated through comparison with acoustically tracked individuals, indicating the reliability of this approach for estimating time of arrival into new habitats.

The Effects of Essential and Non-Essential Metal Toxicity in the Drosophila melanogaster Insect Model: A Review

Mitchell R. Slobodian et al.

Summary: The biological effects of environmental metal contamination, including essential and non-essential metals, are important issues that require more research to fully understand. Drosophila melanogaster is a promising insect model species for studying the impacts of metal toxicity, particularly in addressing the knowledge gaps between essential and non-essential metals. More studies using multiple metals, genetic backgrounds, and both sexes are needed to guide future research towards a better understanding of metal contamination effects.
