Dark fermentation: Production and utilization of volatile fatty acid from different wastes- A review

Ashutosh Kumar Pandey et al.

Summary: VFAs are the building blocks of the chemical industry and play a key role in the planet's organic carbon cycle. To address the issues of unsustainable VFA production from fossil fuels, it is crucial to develop alternate sources through anaerobic digestion. By researching accessible feedstocks, influencing parameters, and utilizing VFAs to create consumer products, economic stability can be achieved through traditional and advanced production methods.

Effect of the Substrate to Inoculum Ratios on the Kinetics of Biogas Production during the Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste

Aakash Khadka et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of varying substrate to inoculum ratios on biogas production during anaerobic digestion of simulated food waste. The results show that the substrate to inoculum ratio has a significant impact on biogas production, with the ratio of 1 showing the highest production rate and the ratio of 6 showing the lowest. The maximum predicted biogas yields are 668.65 NmL/gVS and 653.17 NmL/gVS according to different models. The study also reveals a significant effect of the substrate to inoculum ratio on the kinetics and energy recovery of anaerobic digestion.

Enhancing photo fermentative hydrogen production using ethanol rich dark fermentation effluents

Grazia Policastro et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of a two-phase biorefinery process applied to waste substrates for producing ethanol rich effluents. It involves dark fermentation followed by photo fermentation to optimize hydrogen production from waste biomass. Using winery wastewater as feedstock, no additional treatments are required, and good hydrogen production results are obtained during the photo fermentative stage.

Two-stage anaerobic digestion with direct electric stimulation of methanogenesis: The effect of a physical barrier to retain biomass on the surface of a carbon cloth-based biocathode

Andrey A. Kovalev et al.

Summary: The study investigated a two-stage anaerobic digestion system for efficiently converting organic waste into hydrogen and methane. By using carbon cloth-based biocathodes in an electromethanogenic reactor, the methane yield, production rate, and current density were significantly increased, leading to a more stable and efficient electromethanogenesis process.

Kinetic modeling of hydrogen and L-lactic acid production by Thermotoga neapolitana via capnophilic lactic fermentation of starch

Nirakar Pradhan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of hydrogen and L-lactic acid production from starch using Thermotoga neapolitana under capnophilic lactic fermentation conditions. Different yields of H2 and lactic acid were achieved from potato and wheat starch, with higher lactic acid production observed in the presence of CO2. A kinetic model was applied to simulate the metabolic profile and bioreactor performance, suggesting a new direction towards transforming agricultural food waste into biofuels and valuable biochemicals.
