Environmentally persistent free radicals in bismuth-based metal-organic layers derivatives: Photodegradation of pollutants and mechanism unravelling

Ziwei Wang et al.

Summary: Formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) on carbonaceous material has attracted increasing research attention. In this study, EPFRs were detected in Bi-metal organic layers (Bi-MOLs) derivatives, as well as in HKUST-1 and UiO-66 based derivatives. The system with the highest EPFRs concentration showed superior photocatalytic performance, mainly attributed to the interaction between EPFRs and photoinduced active species, leading to more generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) radicals. Mechanism investigation and DFT calculation suggested that EPFRs not only promote the generation of ROS but also enhance water oxidation by holes, paving the way for further implication of MOFs derivatives and understanding the role of EPFRs in photocatalysis.

Biochar Fine Particles Enhance Uptake of Benzo(a)pyrene to Macrophages and Epithelial Cells via Different Mechanisms

Xinlei Liu et al.

Summary: Biochar fine particles enhance the intracellular transfer of mutagenic and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzo(a)pyrene, into macrophages via the Trojan-horse mechanism. These particles also serve as a reservoir that continuously releases toxic substances into lung fluids, affecting neighboring cells like lung epithelial cells. The cytotoxicity of benzo(a)pyrene carried by biochar fine particles can be predicted based on its bioaccessibility in lung liquids.

Stabilization of lead in polluted sediment based on an eco-friendly amendment strategy: Microenvironment response mechanism

Rui Deng et al.

Summary: Stabilization is crucial for remediating sediment-polluted heavy metals. This study investigated the microenvironmental response mechanisms after the gradual stabilization of Pb in sediment. An eco-friendly amendment strategy utilizing biodegradable sophorolipids showed improved efficiency in Pb stabilization and led to changes in dominant species, particularly Firmicutes, indicating successful stabilization of Pb. This research not only focuses on stabilizing Pb in sediment through eco-friendly methods, but also monitors microenvironmental responses during the stabilization process, laying the groundwork for future heavy metal amendment strategies in sediment environments.
