Liming alters microbial community composition and its co-occurrence patterns in Cd- and Pb-contaminated agricultural soil

Xinqi Wang et al.

Summary: Liming materials have been used to immobilize heavy metals in agricultural soils. A field experiment assessed the effects of liming on bacteria, archaea, and fungi in Cd and Pb contaminated soil. Liming enhanced copiotrophic bacteria and arbuscular fungi but suppressed some oligotrophic bacteria and saprotrophic fungi. Soil-available Cd significantly influenced the community composition of prokaryotes. Community complexity decreased after liming, highlighting the importance of fungi in the microbial community structure.

Nanoscale zerovalent iron, carbon nanotubes and biochar facilitated the phytoremediation of cadmium contaminated sediments by changing cadmium fractions, sediments properties and bacterial community structure

Xiaomin Gong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the use of starch-stabilized nanoscale zerovalent iron, multiwall carbon nanotubes, and tea waste-derived biochar facilitated the phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated sediments by Boehmeria nivea. These materials altered the forms of Cd, sediment properties, and bacterial community structure, promoting plant growth and enhancing Cd bioavailability.

Efficacy and microbial responses of biochar-nanoscale zero-valent during in-situ remediation of Cd-contaminated sediment

Qunqun Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, biochar and BC-nanoscale zero-valent iron composite were used to immobilize Cd in sediments, showing significant reductions in Cd release in water and porewater. The treatments were most effective under alkaline conditions, with nanoscale zero-valent iron composite displaying a higher restriction on Cd release compared to biochar. Bacterial community richness was enhanced with low-dose treatments, while inhibition was observed at high doses.

Climate warming enhances microbial network complexity and stability

Mengting Maggie Yuan et al.

Summary: The authors studied the impact of long-term experimental warming on the complexity and stability of molecular ecological networks in grassland soil microbial communities. The results show that warming increased network complexity and stability, emphasizing the importance of preserving microbial interactions for ecosystem management in the face of climate change.

Characteristics and quantification of mechanisms of Cd2+ adsorption by biochars derived from three different plant-based biomass

Weijie Dai et al.

Summary: The physicochemical properties of rice straw, eucalyptus leaves, and vetiver grass biochars pyrolyzed at 400 degrees C were investigated. It was found that rice straw biochar may possess more acidic functional groups and vetiver grass biochar had the largest specific surface area. Cd2+ adsorption by the biochars was dominated by chemical reaction rather than physical interaction. SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses revealed precipitation, ion exchange, complexation, and cation pi interaction occurring in all the biochars, with precipitation, ion exchange, and cation pi interaction being the main mechanisms contributing to total adsorption capacity.

Influences of modified biochar on metal bioavailability, metal uptake by wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L.) and the soil bacterial community

Yangyang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the application of modified biochar significantly improved soil fertility, increased wheat seedling root biomass by over 50%, and boosted soil dehydrogenase and catalase activities. Additionally, the modified biochar reduced the extractable levels of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in soil, leading to decreased uptake of these metals by wheat roots and shoots. The application of biochar also had an impact on soil bacterial community structure and abundance.

Effects of magnetic biochar-microbe composite on Cd remediation and microbial responses in paddy soil

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interaction between biochar, microorganisms, and Cd remediation in paddy soil by conducting a 90-day microcosm experiment in Hunan, China. Results showed that MBB had better remediation efficiency under anaerobic conditions compared to SBB. Both composites caused changes in microbial communities, with MBB application slightly decreasing alpha diversity but increasing total bacteria population by 700% under aerobic conditions.
