Site-Selective Electrochemical Benzylic C-H Amination

Zhong-Wei Hou et al.

Summary: This study reports a site-selective electrochemical amination reaction that can convert benzylic C-H bonds into C-N linkages without the need for external oxidants or metal catalysts. The success lies in using HFIP as a co-solvent to modulate the oxidation potentials of the substrate and product, avoiding overoxidation of the latter.

Regioselective Synthesis of 2,3-Dihydrobenzo[f]isoindolones via Ag-Catalyzed Sequential Ugi 4CR/Cascade Radical Cyclization Reaction

Ying-Chun He et al.

Summary: An approach to 2,3-dihydrobenzo[f]isoindolones by a Ag-catalyzed Ugi 4CR/cascade radical cyclization sequence under mild conditions was developed. The method successfully achieved regioselective synthesis of 2,3-dihydrobenzo[f]isoindolones in high yields by forming two C-C bonds under air atmosphere in one-pot fashion.

Boron Chelates Derived from N-Acylhydrazones as Radical Acceptors: Photocatalyzed Coupling of Hydrazones with Carboxylic Acids

Igor A. Dmitriev et al.

Summary: Difluoroboryl complexes derived from N-acyl hydrazones are efficient acceptors of alkyl radicals, reacting with carboxylic acids under the influence of an acridine-type photocatalyst to form N-acyl hydrazides. The efficiency of addition at the C=N bond of the chelates is determined by the stabilization of a nitrogen-centered radical by the boron-containing heterocyclic ring.

Late-Stage Heteroarylation of Hetero(aryl)sulfonium Salts Activated by α-Amino Alkyl Radicals

Eva Maria Alvarez et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel method for late-stage heteroarylation of aryl sulfonium salts using alpha-amino alkyl radicals, which differs mechanistically from previously reported halogen-atom transfer (XAT). The new activation mode of aryl sulfonium salts can be carried out in the absence of light and photoredox catalysts, and is applicable to a wide range of heterocycles, showing potential for useful cross-coupling transformations.

Radical Promoted Synthesis of Furoquinolines via Anomalous Dakin-Type Reaction

Sushmita et al.

Summary: A radical promoted approach has been successfully used for the selective synthesis of furo[3,2-b]quinolines and benzylidene-1,3-dihydrofuro[3,4-b]quinolines from 2-alkynyl quinoline-3-carbaldehydes by adjusting the base and oxidant. The reaction mechanism involves 5-endo-dig cyclized furoquinolines with oxidant, and 5-exo-dig cyclized products without oxidant, as supported by X-ray crystallographic studies and control experiments.

Radical Perfluoroalkylation of Arenes via Carbanion Intermediates

Lucas W. Hernandez et al.

Summary: The direct perfluoroalkylation of arenes with pendant benzylic electron-withdrawing groups can be facilitated under basic conditions using sodium dithionite with perfluoroalkyl iodides. This reaction occurs through the attack of the arene on the electrophilic perfluoroalkyl radical, with the donation of electron density from a benzylic anion, expanding the substrate scope beyond benzylic nitriles with cyclic substrates bearing electron-withdrawing groups.

Radical Chain Reduction via Carbon Dioxide Radical Anion (CO2•-)

Cecilia M. Hendy et al.

Summary: An effective method using the radical anion of carbon dioxide as a reductant was developed, allowing for reductive activation of various substrate classes through a radical chain reaction. Different reactions such as hydroarylation, deamination, radical formation, and cleavage were successfully demonstrated, showcasing the versatility of this approach in predicting reaction outcomes based on substrate reduction potentials.

Radical-anion coupling through reagent design: hydroxylation of aryl halides

Andrew J. Greener et al.

Summary: This study describes the design and development of an oxime-based hydroxylation reagent that can selectively convert aryl halides into phenols under simple, transition-metal-free conditions. The key to success lies in identifying a reducing oxime anion that can interact and couple with open-shell aryl radicals. Experimental and computational studies support the proposed radical-nucleophilic substitution chain mechanism.

Stereoelectronic power of oxygen in control of chemical reactivity: the anomeric effect is not alone

Igor Alabugin et al.

Summary: Although carbon is crucial in organic chemistry, it is oxygen that plays a central role in stereoelectronic control. Oxygen can adapt to different situations in various transformations and its interactions play a key role in chemical reactivity. Understanding the fundamental connections between the anomeric effect and different oxygen functionalities is essential for predicting reactivity and designing new synthetic transformations.
