This study successfully isolated total alkaloids from the aerial part of Physalis angulata, and identified cuscohygrine and tropine for the first time in this plant. Additionally, the lipids of the seeds and fatty acids of the leaves were characterized, and the carbohydrate contents of the seeds and leaves were studied. These findings are of significant importance for further understanding the chemical composition of Physalis angulata.
Total alkaloids (0.6%) were isolated from the aerial part of Physalis angulata. The known alkaloids cuscohygrine and tropine were identified for the first time in it. Neutral and polar lipids from seeds and fatty acids from leaves of P. angulata were characterized. Neutral (12.35%) and polar lipids (2.18%) were isolated from seeds. Their fatty-acid compositions (16-17 constituents) were determined. Leaves contained 3.6% total lipids with a fatty-acid composition like that of the plant seeds. Seeds and leaves of P. angulata were studied for carbohydrate contents. Leaves were shown to contain water-soluble polysaccharides and pectinic substances (PS). Their monosaccharide compositions were given. A polysaccharide containing mannan was found in seed WSPS. PS of leaves were highly esterified pectins.
