Hydride-based antiperovskites with soft anionic sublattices as fast alkali ionic conductors

Shenghan Gao et al.

Summary: Most solid-state materials are made up of p-block anions, but the introduction of hydride anions (1s(2)) in oxides has led to the discovery of interesting properties. By combining hydride anions with chalcogenide anions, a family of antiperovskites has been created with soft anionic sublattices. The M(3)HCh antiperovskites (M=Li, Na) exhibit ideal cubic structures, showing low migration barriers for Li+/Na+ transport and high ionic conductivity.

Engineering the Site-Disorder and Lithium Distribution in the Lithium Superionic Argyrodite Li6PS5Br

Ajay Gautam et al.

Summary: The study shows that controlling site-disorder in Li6PS5Br by adjusting synthesis conditions can enhance lithium ion diffusion pathways and increase ionic conductivity. Experimental results and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations corroborate each other, highlighting the importance of this modulation method for design and optimization of argyrodites.

Mechanistic Origin of Superionic Lithium Diffusion in Anion-Disordered Li6PS5X Argyrodites

Benjamin J. Morgan

Summary: The key to rapid ion transport lies in the substitutional anion disorder, which affects the lithium ion diffusion pathways and ultimately impacts the overall ionic conductivity. In materials where the anions are disordered, a three-dimensional diffusion network is established, allowing for long-ranged lithium diffusion through a concerted string-like mechanism. Conversely, in materials where the anions are ordered, lithium ions exhibit pseudo-ordering, hindering long-ranged diffusion and leading to localized lithium motion around sulfur positions.

Design of metastable oxychalcogenide phases by topochemical (de)intercalation of sulfur in La2O2S2

Shunsuke Sasaki et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully demonstrated the topochemical deintercalation/reintercalation of sulfur in a layered oxychalcogenide, leading to the design of novel metastable phases. By reacting La2O2S2 with monovalent metals, they produced sulfur-deintercalated metastable phases La2O2S1.5 and oA-La2O2S, with lamellar structures predicted through an evolutionary structure-prediction algorithm. This study opens up new possibilities for the unexplored topochemistry of mobile chalcogen anions.

Anion ordering enables fast H- conduction at low temperatures

Hiroki Ubukata et al.

Summary: The introduction of chemical disorder by substitutional chemistry into ionic conductors is a common strategy to stabilize high-symmetric phases while maintaining ionic conductivity at lower temperatures. Hydride materials, especially Ba2-delta H3-2 delta X, show promising ionic conductivity below 300 degrees C, opening new directions in electrochemical use of hydrogen. The layered anion order in these materials, along with Schottky defects, helps suppress structural transitions and retain a highly symmetric lattice.
