Comprehensive utilization of corncob for furfuryl alcohol production by chemo-enzymatic sequential catalysis in a biphasic system

Chong-Yang Bu et al.

Summary: A new process for producing furfuryl alcohol from corncob was proposed using deep eutectic solvents and whole cell catalysis. The process involved pretreating corncob with deep eutectic solvents to convert xylan into furfural, enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain glucose-rich enzymatic hydrolysate, and using NADH for furfural reduction. The final furfuryl alcohol yield reached 20.7% with corncob as substrate, demonstrating high-value production and comprehensive utilization of corncob.

Bacterial cellulose/lignin nanoparticles composite films with retarded biodegradability

Dong Tian et al.

Summary: The study prepared BC/lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) composite films with retarded biodegradability, which could expand their application area. The involvement of LNPs had limited influence on the productivity of BC but significantly delayed the biodegradation of composite films. The potential inhibition mechanism was identified as physical barrier and non-productive binding of LNPs.

Short-time deep eutectic solvents pretreatment enhanced production of fermentable sugars and tailored lignin nanoparticles from abaca

Cheng-Ye Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that short-time DES pretreatment is effective in producing high-yield fermentable sugars and tailored LNPs from abaca. Analysis using NMR and GPC showed that DES lignin fractions have depolymerized structures with relatively low molecular weight, and TEM analysis confirmed that these lignin fractions are LNPs. Furthermore, all DES lignin exhibited excellent antioxidant activities, making them potential natural antioxidants for industrial applications.

Summary: The study demonstrated the controllable preparation of lignin nanoparticles using acetone/water cosolvent method. The size of LNPs showed a positive correlation with lignin concentration, with the smallest LNPs obtained at 5.00 g/L lignin concentration. LNPs were found to be highly efficient in stabilizing oil-in-water Pickering emulsions due to their irreversible adsorption at the oil-water interface of the droplets.

Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment of control and transgenic poplars for boosting the lignin valorization and cellulose bioconversion

Cheng-Ye Ma et al.

Summary: This study developed a microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment method to improve the extractability and valorization of lignin in poplar wood, reducing biomass recalcitrance. The results showed that the pretreatment significantly increased the yield of DES lignin in transgenic poplar woods compared to control, and also led to decreased molecular weight and different linkages in the lignin fractions. Moreover, the DES pretreatment facilitated lignin isolation and improved enzymatic saccharification ratios, indicating a strong deconstruction ability towards poplar wood and boosting cellulose bioconversion.

Understanding lignin micro- and nanoparticte nucleation and growth in aqueous suspensions by solvent fractionation

Jacob D. Zwilling et al.

Summary: Recent advances in developing sustainable, micro- and nanoscale materials from biobased resources have focused on utilizing lignin to strengthen the bioeconomy. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the various interactions present during and after the formation of lignin micro- and nanoparticles (LPs). These interactions are influenced by the chemical composition, molecular weight distribution, and solvent/water polarity. Factors such as lignin concentration also play a role in nucleation and growth mechanisms, with LPs formed at low concentrations exhibiting larger particle sizes than those formed at higher concentrations.
