Crystalline grain refinement toughened isotactic polypropylene through rapid quenching of stretched melt

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: Nanoscale grain refinement is a powerful tool to enhance the mechanical and physical properties of metals and alloys, but it is rarely reported in widely used semicrystalline polymers. This study demonstrates a feasible strategy to fabricate ultrafine-grained isotactic polypropylene (iPP) by rapid quenching of stretched melt, leading to a significant improvement in tensile toughness without sacrificing modulus and strength. The rope-like fracture morphology observed in toughened samples indicates a potential mechanism related to refined crystalline grains.
