Algal-bacterial consortia for bioproduct generation and wastewater treatment

Liqun Jiang et al.

Summary: Microalgae have potential for bioenergy production and wastewater treatment, but challenges remain, including the need for systematic studies on maintaining stable and effective operation of Microalgal-Bacterial Consortia (MABC). Additional research is needed to address the interactions between algae and bacteria in wastewater and optimize the use of MABC for high-value bioproduct generation.

Novel shortcut biological nitrogen removal using activated sludge-biofilm coupled with symbiotic algae

Bingtang Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated a novel shortcut biological nitrogen removal method using activated sludge-biofilm coupled with microalgae, achieving high nitrogen removal efficiency and potential to lower operating costs. The algal-bacterial symbiosis improved species richness but reduced microbial diversity of the biofilm, with significant contributions from Nitrosomonas and Thauera in the nitrogen removal process. Additionally, the study indicated that algae and activated sludge coupling increased nitrous oxide emission in the shortcut nitrogen removal process.

Interactions of microalgae-bacteria consortia for nutrient removal from wastewater: A review

Alireza Fallahi et al.

Summary: Nitrogen and phosphorus pollution can lead to eutrophication which disrupts ecosystems. Wastewater treatment using microalgae-bacteria consortia can enhance nutrient removal efficiency. Understanding the mechanisms of interaction between microalgae and bacteria can improve nutrient transformation and recovery, with the nitrogen source in wastewater playing a crucial role in their interaction.

Pilot-scale two-stage constructed wetlands based on novel solid carbon for rural wastewater treatment in southern China: Enhanced nitrogen removal and mechanism

Lixia Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that PHBV/PLA blends significantly improved the removal efficiency of pollutants in constructed wetlands, particularly in terms of ammonia nitrogen, COD, and total phosphorus. Additionally, Rhodocyclaceae and Bacteroidetes were identified as the primary denitrifying bacteria on the surface of PHBV/PLA blends. The presence of PHBV/PLA blends also influenced the gene expression in the wetlands, leading to better denitrification performance.

Challenges of THP-AD centrate treatment using partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A)-inhibition, biomass washout, low alkalinity, recalcitrant and more

Shenbin Cao et al.

Summary: This study developed a cost-effective partial nitritation-anammox process to address the challenges in treating THP-AD centrate, achieving a nitrogen removal rate of 0.55 kg N/m3/d with mitigation strategies. However, issues such as sludge washout, AOB inhibition, and declining anammox activity were observed at higher THP-AD centrate concentrations. The study provides insights for developing an energy-saving treatment process for THP-AD centrate.
