Direct observations of tribological behavior in cutting with textured cutting tools

Tatsuya Sugihara et al.

Summary: The paper summarizes recent advances in tool surface texturing in metal cutting fields and how the textured surface of a cutting tool influences the deformation fields of the workpiece material. It emphasizes the importance of a deep understanding of surface phenomena for the development of textured cutting tools and discusses the impact of surface textures on chip flow mode and cutting energy.

Tribological characterization of different geometries generated with laser surface texturing for tooling applications

Demofilo Maldonado-Cortes et al.

Summary: Various techniques, including coatings, heat treatments, lubricants, additives, and laser surface texturing (LST), have been used to enhance the tribological properties of surfaces in contact and relative movement. Among different geometries studied for LST, circles, triangles, and lines have shown the most promising results in reducing coefficient of friction (COF) and wear. The study also compared the performance of different geometries under varying pressures, with circles showing the best performance at low pressures and S shape geometry showing the best performance at high pressures.

Study on micro-grinding mechanism and surface quality of high-volume fraction SiCp/Al composites

Qi Gao et al.

Summary: SiCp/Al composites containing fine reinforcing particles with high hardness and rigidity pose challenges in processing, but micro-grinding experiments using electroplated diamond grinding rods have shown a minimum surface roughness of 0.51 microns. The grinding mechanism of high-volume fraction SiCp/Al composites is mainly characterized by brittle fracture and pull-out of particles, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy analysis and micro-grinding simulation models.
