Fabrication and properties of pressure-sintered reaction-bonded Si3N4 ceramics with addition of Eu2O3-MgO-Y2O3

Li-Xiang Wu et al.

Summary: PSRBSN ceramics were successfully prepared using a hot-press sintering method, with added Eu2O3-MgO-Y2O3 promoting full nitridation of Si powder, resulting in improved ceramic properties. The addition of 5 wt% Eu2O3 led to higher relative density, hardness, strength, and thermal conductivity compared to non-doped samples.

Improved thermal conductivity of β-Si3N4 ceramics through the modification of the liquid phase by using GdH2 as a sintering additive

Weide Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of GdH2 increases the N/O ratio in the liquid phase, enhancing thermal conductivity while reducing flexural strength at high temperatures. This is mainly due to the exaggerated bimodal microstructure resulting from the substitution of Gd2O3 by GdH2.

Self-reinforced and high-thermal conductivity silicon nitride by tailoring ?-? phase ratio with pressureless multi-step sintering

Jung Hoon Kong et al.

Summary: A self-reinforced Si3N4 ceramic with high thermal conductivity was prepared through multi-step pressureless sintering with Y2O3 and MgO additives, achieving improved flexural strength and thermal conductivity by utilizing a partial α-β phase transformation to establish a bimodal microstructure. The rate constant and activation energy of the sintering process were calculated to assess the potential of obtaining the proper quantity of α-Si3N4 seeds through the phase transformation.

Improved toughness of spark-plasma-sintered Si3N4 ceramics by adding HfB2

Si-Chun Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, high toughness and high hardness Si3N4 ceramics with fine and bimodal microstructure were successfully prepared by adding HfB2 and using spark plasma sintering (SPS). The introduction of HfB2 promoted phase transformation, significantly improving the toughness while slightly decreasing the hardness of Si3N4 ceramics.

Characterization of spark plasma sintered TiC-Si3N4 ceramics

Yaghoub Pazhouhanfar et al.

Summary: This research compared the sintering behavior and physical-mechanical characteristics of TiC and TiC-Si3N4 ceramics, revealing the deposition of carbon in monolithic TiC and the in-situ formation of SiC and N-2 phases when Si3N4 was incorporated. Despite the thermodynamic assessment suggesting the in-situ synthesis of TiN, no evidence of it was found in the experiment. The TiC-Si3N4 ceramic showed thermal conductivity of 10.1 W/mK, Vickers hardness of 2966 HV0.1kg, and flexural strength of 219 MPa.

Effect of composite sintering additives containing non-oxide on mechanical, thermal and dielectric properties of silicon nitride ceramics substrate

Feng Hu et al.

Summary: Silicon nitride ceramics were prepared by gas-pressure sintering with magnesium silicon nitride and Y2O3 as sintering additives. The study found that the amount and proportion of MgSiN2 and Y2O3 significantly influenced the properties and microstructure of Si3N4 ceramics, impacting thermal conductivity, mechanical, and dielectric properties. This demonstrated the importance of composite sintering additives containing non-oxides on the combination properties of Si3N4 ceramic substrates.
