Interface formation and bonding control in high-volume-fraction (TiC+TiB2)/Al composites and their roles in enhancing properties

Hong-Yu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, (TiC+TiB2)/Al composites fabricated using the Al-Ti-B4C system showed significantly enhanced mechanical properties compared to TiC/Al composites, attributed to the improved interface bonding strength and energy dissipation of crack propagation. The reduction in reaction heat, improved crystallographic match, and enhanced adhesion work between ceramic particles and matrix in the (TiC+TiB2)/Al composites contributed to the formation of enhanced interfaces, providing a new idea for the design and control of interfaces in high-volume-fraction ceramic-metal composites.

Interface characteristics between TiN and matrix and their effect on solidification structure

Tian-peng Qu et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous nucleation is an effective method to promote the dispersion and precipitation of second-phase particles in steel and refine the grain size of solidification structure. TiN in ferritic stainless steel can not only refine the as-cast structure grain size, but also pin grain boundaries and restrain the overgrowth of grains during rolling. The interface characteristics between TiN and heterogeneous phases were studied based on wetting angles and lattice matching, with the proposed wetting-lattice misfit theory offering a better reflection of microstructure refinement mechanism.

Effect of Ti/V ratio on thermodynamics and kinetics of MC in γ/α matrices of Ti-V microalloyed steels

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: A model was established to describe the thermodynamics and kinetics of (Ti, V)C precipitates in Ti-V microalloyed steels, which was verified by experimental results. By decreasing the Ti/V ratio, the complete-dissolution temperature, equilibrium volume fraction, and nucleation temperature of MC precipitates all decrease monotonically. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm the reliability and accuracy of the model for (Ti, V)C precipitates.

Hardening of Ti(CN)?Fe composites by microstructural refinement and solid solution strengthening of metallic phase

Hanjung Kwon et al.

Summary: Ti(CN)?Fe composites were hardened by refining microstructure and strengthening metallic phase through low-temperature/short-time sintering of nanocrystalline composite powders. The enhanced hardness of the composites resulted from uniform microstructure with reduced grain size, short Fe binder mean free path, and solid-solution strengthening of the Fe binder by the Ti solute. The Ti(CN)?Fe composites hardened in this way could expand the application range of Ti(CN)-based composites in mechanical parts.

Grinding performance oriented experimental evaluation on TiC-Steel cermet with vitrified bond cBN wheel

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the grinding performance of TiC-Steel cermet using a customized vitrified bond cBN wheel. Results showed that the main removal modes of TiC-Steel cermet are plastic removal of steel phase and brittle fracture of ceramic phase. Surface roughness parameters increase with grinding depths and decrease with spindle rotation speed, with feed rate having less impact on surface quality. Optimal processing parameters were determined to achieve the best surface quality and lowest grinding force.

Competitive precipitation behavior of hybrid reinforcements in copper matrix composites fabricated by powder metallurgy

Tao Lan et al.

Summary: Copper matrix composites reinforced by in situ-formed hybrid titanium boride whiskers (TiBw) and titanium diboride particles (TiB2p) exhibit competitive precipitation behavior, with the relative contents varying with sintering temperature. The precipitation mechanisms are controlled by solid-state diffusion of B atoms, forming a compact compound layer. Competitive precipitation behavior is attributed to the growth model transition during the reaction process.
