Hydration of blended cement with high volume iron-rich slag from non-ferrous metallurgy

Vincent Hallet et al.

Summary: The study found that iron-rich slag has a retarding effect on the hydration of ordinary Portland cement, but as time progresses, the reaction extent of different components in blended cements increases. Iron interacts with other components in blended cements, forming different forms of iron presence. The Ca/Si atomic ratio of C-S-H in blended cements decreases with increasing slag content, while the Al/Ca ratio increases slightly.

Revisiting the iron-rich ordinary Portland cement towards valorisation of wastes: study of Fe-to-Al ratio on the clinker production and the hydration reaction

Summary: This study investigated the effects of substituting aluminum for iron on OPC clinker production, finding that Fe to Al replacement did not substantially affect melt formation at usual production temperatures. The substitution promoted the formation of alite and ferrite while reducing the formation of aluminate and belite in clinker phase assemblage. The Fe-rich cements showed longer setting times and slightly lower mechanical strength.

Iron speciation in blast furnace slag cements

A. Mancini et al.

Summary: Analysis of slag-containing pastes and concretes using synchrotron-based techniques revealed variations in iron speciation depending on the water environment. While iron sulphide, goethite, and siliceous hydrogarnet were found in blended slag cements hydrated in contact with river water, no Fe(0) was observed in blended concretes exposed to sea water, indicating accelerated iron oxidation in the latter environment. Additionally, other iron compounds such as iron sulphide, iron(II)-hydroxide and -oxide, hematite, magnetite, and ilmenite were detected in the aggregates of the sea water-exposed samples.

Multi-scale imaging, strength and permeability measurements: Understanding the durability of Roman marine concrete

Jackson MacFarlane et al.

Summary: The study on Roman marine concrete reveals its long-term physicochemical resilience and durability. Through stress-strain measurements, structural microscopy, and chemical spectroscopy, it was found that the low permeability of RMC is related to its microstructure dominated by mortar and the presence of sulfur-rich fibrous minerals in a crossbred matrix. This fine interweaving of sulfur-rich fibers enhances aggregate bonding and contributes to the durability of Roman concrete.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure and performance of geopolymer binders developed from iron-rich laterite soils under different curing conditions. Results show that higher curing temperatures enhance the dissolution of Al, Si and Fe elements, leading to increased compressive strength of the binders. Geopolymer cured in the dry state exhibits higher compressive strength at all ages, and samples cured at high temperatures demonstrate a densified microstructure and higher thermal conductivity.

Use of Potabilized Water Sludge in the Production of Low-Energy Blended Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements

Antonio Telesca et al.

Summary: The study discusses the use of Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements as an alternative to Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to reduce carbon footprint in cement production. CSA cements, with less limestone and lower synthesis temperatures, show reduced CO2 emissions and can be blended with supplementary cementitious materials to further decrease carbon footprint. The research findings indicate that CSA binders with water potabilization sludges (WPSs) as supplementary cementitious materials exhibit similar technological properties as plain CSA cement but with more pronounced eco-friendly features.

Summary: The flow behavior of alkali-activated Fe-rich slag suspensions was studied, with modifications to the activator SiO2/Na2O molar ratio and H2O content to determine their impact on rheology. Changes in these parameters led to variations in yield stress and elasticity, with higher ratios resulting in more complex silicate structures and lower ratios leading to increased monomers.
