Revisiting Tennis-Jennings method to quantify low-density/high-density calcium silicate hydrates in Portland cement pastes

Ryo Kurihara et al.

Summary: The Tennis-Jennings quantification method was applied to characterize LD and HD C-S-H. Research found that the fineness of the original cement powder and the type of cement have effects on the mass ratio of LD C-S-H to total C-S-H, especially at higher W/C ratios. However, for cement pastes with lower W/C ratios, the type of cement did not significantly impact LD C-S-H precipitation during later hydration.

Surface area changes in C3S paste during the first drying analyzed by 1H NMR relaxometry

Ippei Maruyama et al.

Summary: The drying process of pure C3S paste with a water to binder ratio of 0.55 was monitored using proton nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry under different relative humidity conditions. Experimental results provided insights into the interlayer water desorption isotherm. The relationship between interlayer water content and T-2 value defined the surface relaxation time, offering quantitative data on adsorbed water and C-S-H surface area changes.

Investigation of the First Sorption Cycle of White Portland Cement by 1H NMR

Anastasiia Nagmutdinova et al.

Summary: This study focused on investigating the effects of drying/re-saturation cycles on White Portland Cement samples using H-1 NMR Relaxometry. The research found reversible and irreversible changes in the pore structure during drying, particularly in smaller porosity. Additionally, a new method was developed to deeply investigate the changes of solid components during sorption cycles.

Mesoscale modelling of dynamic porosity in cement hydrate gel during a water sorption cycle: A lattice Boltzmann study

Summary: A lattice Boltzmann modelling framework is described for exploring water sorption in cement, coupled to a dynamic model of cement hydrate microstructure. The first simulations using the model show good qualitative agreement with experimental results in extracting transport and microstructural relaxation parameters. Limitations of the methodology are discussed.
