Functional modification of cellulose by chitosan and gamma radiation for higher grafting of UV protective natural chromophores

M. Tauhidul Islam et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a green functionalization process of cellulose substrate by combining chitosan treatment and gamma radiation, which resulted in improved UV protection characteristics through the grafting of natural chromophores from BFS. The optimum conditions for maximum sorption and improved color strength were achieved at 80°C for 60 min, and the concurrent treatments significantly enhanced the total crystallinity index, hydrogen bond intensity, and hydrogen bonding energy of the functionalized cellulose. The combination of chitosan and gamma treatment showed the best results for improved molecular orientation of cellulose and achieved a maximum UV protection factor rating with a linear relationship to the absorption of UVPNCs.

Summary: This study demonstrated a facile and sustainable modification of cellulose using plant tannins and chitosan, resulting in higher impregnation of UV protective natural chromophores. The optimal impregnation conditions for entrapping UVPNCs were identified, and the impregnated bio-templated cellulose showed significantly higher UV shielding properties compared to metal-treated cellulose substrates. The enhanced absorption mechanisms and durability of the impregnated UVPNCs in the modified cellulose were evaluated and found to be excellent.

Comparative dyeing behavior and UV protective characteristics of cotton fabric treated with polyphenols enriched banana and watermelon biowaste

Md Luthfar Rahman Liman et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a facile way to modify cotton fabric with polyphenol extracts from banana floral stem and watermelon rind for UV protection. The absorption of these chromophores into cellulose was enhanced by chelating with metals, resulting in improved UV shielding ability of the dyed fabrics. The banana floral stem dyed substrate showed higher UV protection compared to watermelon rind dyed substrate, attributed to higher absorption intensities and bonding capacity.

Graphene- and Nanoparticle-Embedded Antimicrobial and Biocompatible Cotton/Silk Fabrics for Protective Clothing

Shovon Bhattacharjee et al.

Summary: Research indicates that cotton/silk fabrics embedded with RGO and Ag/Cu nanoparticles exhibit high antimicrobial activity against various bacteria. These fabrics also maintain good bactericidal properties even after 10 washes and show low cytotoxicity towards mammalian cells, demonstrating good biocompatibility. This suggests that RGO-NPs embedded in cotton or silk fabrics have potential applications in protective clothing and medical textiles.
