Filament-wound glass-fibre reinforced polymer composites: Potential applications for cross arm structure in transmission towers

M. R. M. Asyraf et al.

Summary: This manuscript reviews previous literature on filament-wound polymer composites and their potential applications as cross arm structures in latticed transmission towers. The current trend of using pultruded glass fibre-reinforced polymer composites for cross arms without additional configurations may lead to sudden failure due to creep and laminate crack propagation caused by extreme tropical climate and dynamic wind loads. Previous literature suggests that glass fibre-reinforced polymer composites exhibit superior corrosion resistance, strength, resilience to extreme conditions, and serviceability. Additionally, these composites can also function as good insulators in lightning impulse strength. Therefore, it is recommended to adopt a core structure as reinforcement in the cross arm design using filament winding process to ensure long-term structural integrity and withstand extreme environmental conditions.

Potential of Natural Fibers in Composites for Ballistic Applications - A Review

Suhas Yeshwant Nayak et al.

Summary: This paper presents a review of natural fiber composites used in ballistic applications. The review assesses two categories of composites, natural fibers and hybrid composites, and compares them with synthetic fibers. The results show that hybrid composites exhibit superior properties compared to plain natural fiber composites. Natural fibers offer an ecological and economical alternative with promising future scope in ballistic applications.

Product Development of Natural Fibre-Composites for Various Applications: Design for Sustainability

Muhammad Rizal Muhammad Asyraf et al.

Summary: This review article aims to consolidate the principles and current literature on design for sustainability and discuss its future direction. It suggests that design for sustainability methods should be established based on the concept of sustainability in ecological, economic, and social dimensions. Integrating sustainability into engineering designs is crucial for producing greener products and system innovation. However, the current literature lacks the connection between the design for sustainability concept and concurrent engineering during the design development stage, which should be further developed. The paper also presents several future research directions.

Hybridization of MMT/Lignocellulosic Fiber Reinforced Polymer Nanocomposites for Structural Applications: A Review

Aisyah Humaira Alias et al.

Summary: Significant research efforts have been focused on utilizing nanomaterials hybridized with lignocellulosic fibers in polymer nanocomposites, particularly through the introduction of nanoparticles like montmorillonite nanoclay to enhance strength and thermal stability. The distinctive properties of MMT, including hydrophilicity and high strength, contribute to its dispersion in water-soluble polymers and intercalation into monomers and polymers, leading to the creation of nanoscale particle monolayers in composites. The review comprehensively discusses techniques for obtaining these polymer nanocomposites and highlights their mechanical, thermal, and flame retardancy properties, showcasing the potential for advanced industrial applications.
